Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship (Limited Term*)This position is full-time, at-will, and budgeted for 14 months with the approximate program period of late October 2026 through December 31, 2027. Post-apprenticeship employment opportunities may be available, but are not guaranteed.The Maintenance Worker Apprentice plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the safety, functionality, and aesthetic of our public spaces, including streets, parks, facilities, equipment and infrastructure by performing essential tasks such as litter removal, traffic safety setup, equipment maintenance, and assisting in construction, repair, and electrical work.If you are passionate about serving your community, have an interest in the field of Public Works, and recognize the value in creating clean, safe, and welcoming environments for residents and visitors, the Maintenance Worker Apprenticeship could be an excellent opportunity for you!The One Irvine Workforce Apprenticeship Program is funded through the California Volunteers Youth Service Corps grant. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain on-the-job training, experience the benefits of public service, and invest in your future.Apprenticeship Eligibility Requirements:Participants must be between 18-30 years old on their first day of service, estimated to be late October 2026.Priority will be given to Irvine residents who meet at least two of the following: Are unemployed or out of schoolAre low-incomeMay have difficulty finding employmentAre first generation college studentsWere in or have transitioned from foster careAre or were engaged with a mental health or substance abuse systemAre or were justice-involvedAre experiencing or have experienced housing instabilityHave not participated in an AmeriCorps programYour Impact:Perform a variety of manual labor tasks to support maintenance of City facilities, streets, equipment and parks, including debris and trash removal, restroom cleaning and stocking, and upkeep of litter-free public areas.Maintain, repair, and clean park amenities such as playground equipment, picnic tables and shelters, signs, fences, bleachers, ball courts, drinking fountains, pools, and ponds; remove graffiti and perform painting and minor construction, as needed.Perform general facility maintenance, including inspecting and replacing light bulbs, ballasts, ceiling tiles, and light fixtures; checking and repairing doors, hinges, locks, and handles; patching drywall and touching up paint; inspecting and cleaning gutters, downspouts, and pressure wash walkways and walls.Maintain interior surfaces and fixtures by vacuuming, mopping, buffing floors, spot-cleaning carpets, and replacing broken floor tiles or torn carpeting to reduce trip hazards.Provide plumbing support by unclogging drains, inspecting for leaks or corrosion, replacing faucet aerators, washers, and repairing or replacing leaking faucets and toilets.Ensure electrical safety by testing and resetting GFCI outlets, and performing monthly checks on emergency lights and exit signs.Respond to facility issues such as leaks, power outages, and triggered alarms.Assist with basic street, sidewalk, curb, and storm drain construction and repair; perform asphalt and concrete work including demolition, preparation, crack sealing, and surface paving.Set up and maintain traffic control devices and barricades to ensure public and crew safety at job sites and special events.Perform general upkeep and cleaning of work areas, including the Fleet Services shop, and support warehouse operations.Assist with marking excavation zones as part of the City's DigAlert program; dig holes, shovel and rake materials, backfill, and sweep up work areas using hand and power tools.Support electrical maintenance activities by running conduit and pulling wires, installing electrical components (e.g., breaker boxes, switches, lights), and disassembling or repairing faulty equipment using appropriate hand tools.Assist electricians with installations, blueprint reading, and EMT pipe bending; demonstrate familiarity with tools for electrical work and use of appropriate safety methods.Perform various painting tasks using brushes, rollers, spray machines, and ladders; apply both water- and oil-based paints to a variety of surfaces.Provide fleet maintenance services, including oil changes, fluid checks, belt and filter replacements, and basic diagnostics using scan tools.Inspect, repair and replace brake system components such as pads, rotors, drums and hydraulics.Perform tire mounting, rotation and balancing, patch repairs and tread depth checks.Operate and maintain small equipment such as weed eaters, brush cutters, forklifts, hand trucks, and other tools to perform maintenance and repair activities.Safely operate City vehicles between work sites; maintain vehicle and storage areas in a clean, secure condition, and ensure proper care of tools and equipment.Provide customer service by responding to public inquiries and concerns professionally and courteously.Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent.Some experience in the fields of automobile services, construction, roadway repair, landscape, or facilities/building maintenance or repair, or related field; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, twist, and bend repeatedly, squat and kneel, crawl, grasp items, reach overhead, use both hands, legs and feet, and lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.Best Fit:Excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.Exceptional interpersonal skills and a passion for customer service.Ability to take direction with humility and a desire to invest in professional growth.Ability to use a computer and related software to input, query, and maintain data.Knowledge of the function, purpose, and safe operation of hand and power tools, and shop machinery.Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of troubleshooting for construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, welding, and cabinetry.Knowledge of the basic principles, practices, and safety techniques related to transporting and/or towing vehicles/equipment.Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as regulations, time sheets and general operating manuals.Hours: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per work, with shifts scheduled Monday – Friday.
