AGRICULTURAL INSPECTOR AID

Job Overview Position: Agricultural Inspector Aid, #0004 within the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures. Responsibilities Assist in performing inspections at private and public properties, identifying and collecting pest specimens. Make descriptions and determine specimen identity, applying control using traps, pesticides, tools, and equipment; maintain accurate records for insect traps. Assist in inspection connected with enforcement of plant pest and agricultural standardization laws, collecting and submitting samples of target pests for laboratory analysis. Explain government acts, regulations, and required standards to businesses and homeowners, providing routine policy, procedure, and regulatory information. Assist in trapping insects as part of an infestation detection program—selecting plant hosts for trap placement, assembling and baiting traps. Count and identify pests in traps to protect the environment and agricultural industry. Collect field data, generate inspection reports, document activity in written form or electronic software (CalTrap), and communicate with supervisors and peers via phone, email, or in person. Drive vehicle (e.g., truck) between inspection sites to maintain and service traps. Required Qualifications Option I: Completion of a natural science course at an accredited college. Option II: One (1) year of experience in work involving the recognition of insect forms. Valid California Class "C" Driver License. Desired Qualifications Additional experience beyond the requirements or successful completion of additional natural science courses in Biology, Botany, Entomology, Horticulture, Parasitology, Plant Pathology, or Zoology. Physical Requirements Physical Class III – Moderate. Duties include standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds. Examination Content The examination evaluates education, experience, and desirable qualifications and is weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve at least 70 % to qualify. Eligibility and Vacancy Information Applications are processed as received. Successful candidates are placed on a list lasting 12 months and may be selected for temporary and permanent vacancies throughout the County. The list is used to fill vacancies as they occur.
