CABVI is seeking a Managing Optometrist to manage and oversee the operation of three vision care locations: one primary and two satellite clinics. Partner with eye care providers in the care of patients balancing business management with inventory, patient care, financial reimbursement, marketing and scheduling. Provide optometry services to clinic patients, including vision examinations, eye health screenings, prescriptions of lens and frames, recommendations for vision devices and aids, referrals to internal and external resources.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assess, consult, and conduct eye examinations using observation, determining visual perception, acuity, coordination, and focus. Tests may include subjective refractions, retinoscopy, lensometry, slit lamp examination, visual fields, pupil and mobility testing and tear function testing. Completes all required documentation in a timely manner. Ensure documentation completed by others is accurate, especially documents that are a part of the clinical record.
  • Provide input, support, and guidance to optical services. This would include selection of frames, contracts with labs, coordination of services with an optician, inventory, pricing and sales, specialty product lines and more.
  • Prescribe appropriate devices including low vision aides and eyeglasses.
  • Develop protocols and procedures for tele-medicine. Conduct tele-medicine examinations as needed and ensure appropriate billing procedures.
  • Provide supervision, guidance and support to CABVI optometrists and optic technicians. Ensure staff have the skills and resources to excel in their positions. Consult and guide staff as they encounter complex eye issues and/or dual impairments. Work to manage staff time and support staff as they work to increase efficiency. Embrace technology to advance clinical protocols.
  • Review intakes including pre-evaluation questions, medications current vision aide if applicable and any other pertinent data. Both conduct and interpret testing including specialty imaging to establish diagnosis and co-manage eye conditions. Assess the individual patient for appropriateness of procedures identifying complex cases requiring increased interventions.
  • Document exam findings and recommendations, compose letters to primary medical provider and or referral source. Meet the documentation requirements for various insurance plans. Assist with billing of services as needed. Refers patients to external and or internal resources as needed.
  • Provide supervision of contracted optician and contracted low vision optometrist in provision of services. Manage optical dispensary. Work with the Director of Rehab Clinical Services to determine inventory, stock levels and promotion events associated with the dispensing of eyeglasses. Work with the VP of Development to pursue grants and funding to address the optical needs of underserved populations.
  • Provide clinical oversight to CABVI’s Occupational Therapist in provision of vision therapy, including visual impairments related to concussion, stroke, and other traumatic brain injuries. Guide services to children who are impacted by reading difficulties, convergence and divergence, tracking and other visual limitations. Conduct supplemental testing to confirm diagnosis and approve therapy plan. Work closely to ensure patient progress. Consult with and guide OTs in provision of care.
  • Support ongoing rehab research projects and future research projects. Assist in the identification of future research partners. Engage in research as the need arises.
  • Represent the Vision Health and Wellness Center by performing community and professional outreach, education and information of vision loss related topics through presentations, events and workshops. Assist in the marketing and promotion of agency programs and services. Network with related professional, groups and organizations.
  • Support employees, both sighted and visually impaired, to ensure CABVI work environments are conducive to good ocular health. Provide vision care to employees. Work with CABVI’s Assistive Technology Center to ensure employee accessibility. Partner with ATC staff to introduce assistive technology to those with vision loss and continually seek out the latest advances in the field.
  • Establish and maintain referral relationships with ophthalmologists, optometrists, physicians, and other medical personnel, as well as NYSCB, ACCESS-VR, school contract personnel and other professional organizations.
  • Maintain awareness of current academic material and research. Continue professional development in low vision and optometric field.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Rehab Clinical Service and the VP of Rehabilitation expand vision and low vision service to meet consumer needs. Welcome new approaches to patient care and continually analyze new population groups services can benefit. Actively involved in the development, revision and evaluation of low vision and optical services to ensure high quality standards and quality care. Work to ensure annual department goals are met and the budget is maintained.
  • Educate patients regarding conditions which may require further intervention including diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and binocular vision problems.
  • Network with the NYS School of Optometry and other academic institutions to bring interns to CABVI. Develop an internship training program. If needed, partner with local eye care providers to ensure a rich internship program. Supervise and mentor optometry trainees. Provide training to new rehabilitation department employees and associated department college interns.
  • Serve as a member of the CABVI Rehab Advisory Committee. Keep current with vision industry’s best practices, research, and state/federal licensing.
  • Participate in rehab department meetings, management meetings, training and center activities. Actively engage in CABVI corporate events and agency training opportunities.

 

Requirements Include:

  • Must possess a Doctor of Optometry degree with a current active license issued by the NY State Board of Optometry. Willing to secure a NY State Certificate as a Low Vision Specialist
  • Minimum of 5 years’ previous management experience required.
  • Must be able to write effective clinical notes, reports and correspondence. Must have ability to provide visual cues according to consumer's visual status.
  • Must be comfortable using laptop computer and iPad.
  • Must have skills to operate optometric equipment including but not limited to retinal camera, phoropter, ophthalmoscope, keratometer, lensometer, retinoscope, visual field machine, Snellen charts and more. Must be willing to learn new technology.
  • Ability to travel to all three low vision clinic locations providing management, supervision and working in eth capacity of an optometrist.
