About the Position

The department of Public Works is looking for a Custodian to join our team. Under supervision, cleans and maintains an assigned area in County buildings and performs other related work as required.

Typical tasks and representative duties include:

• Cleans, scrubs and disinfects offices, restrooms and various other areas, walls, equipment, drinking fountains and outside walks and areas
• Cleans, vacuums, sweeps, mops, waxes, buffs, polishes and strips floors
• Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, equipment and fixtures
• Cleans, dusts and washes windows, mirrors, window blinds and drapes.
• Performs simple maintenance tasks.
• Completes requisitions and dispenses cleaning and household supplies.
• Empties and cleans containers, wastebaskets and ashtrays; empties recycled materials into appropriate containers.
• Checks and turns on and off heating and cooling equipment.
• Locks and unlocks buildings; turns lights on and off; raises and lowers flags.
• May meet members of the public in the course of work. Drives County vehicles to service facilities and pick-up or deliver supplies.

Employment standards include knowledge of building cleaning methods, supplies and equipment, safe working methods and procedures, and interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. The ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform heavy manual work, establish and maintain effective working relationships, complete standardized reports, and maintain safe and orderly work areas is also required.

The ideal candidate will take the time needed to maintain clean, safe, and welcoming County facilities. Because much of the work is performed independently, honesty, integrity, and accountability are essential. The successful candidate can be trusted to stay productive, manage their time, and complete their work to a high standard without constant supervision. This individual is comfortable working in a busy environment, adapting to changing priorities, and helping wherever needed. They have a positive, easy-going attitude and work well both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and customer service skills are important. The ideal candidate is approachable and comfortable interacting with County employees, departments, and the public. They communicate respectfully, respond to concerns, and do not hesitate to engage with customers when questions or issues arise. The successful candidate is reliable, safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and willing to take initiative. A valid driver's license and safe driving record are required, as travel between multiple County facilities is an essential part of the position.

Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes graduation from high school or GED.

Licenses and certificates: A valid driver license is required at the time of application. A valid California driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Other conditions of employment: Employees in this classification may be required to work holidays, weekends and irregular hours. The current opening position is for a custodian on the morning shift, 4:00am - 12:30pm, Monday - Friday. Must pass a background and law enforcement security check for this position.
