Biocenter Scientist, DNA Lab Project Leader

AstraZeneca seeks a Biocenter Scientist to lead DNA laboratory operations in Gaithersburg, managing receipt, processing, extraction, quality assessment, storage, and distribution of human biological samples. The role combines hands-on scientific work with project leadership, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration in a high-throughput environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee high-throughput receipt, processing, and reconciliation of human biological samples annually
• Perform DNA extraction, assessment, normalization, aliquoting, storage, and distribution using approved methods
• Maintain sample identity, chain of custody, data integrity, and complete records in LIMS systems
• Operate, maintain, qualify, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and automated platforms
• Develop business cases for laboratory equipment and automation investments; support method improvements and staff training

Requirements

• Master's degree in molecular biology or related discipline, or equivalent experience
• Minimum five years' laboratory experience with DNA extraction, quantification, and quality assessment
• Experience handling human biological samples in regulated or quality-controlled environments
• Proficiency with LIMS, sample inventory systems, and DNA quality-control instrumentation
• Knowledge of molecular biology, biosafety, contamination control, and good documentation practices
• Strong data management, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities
• Clear communication skills and ability to collaborate across scientific and operational teams
