Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is looking to hire a Motor Equipment Operator II for Public Works Operations - Street Maintenance. We are looking for a team player to join our Asphalt team. This position does require a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.

The Motor Equipment Operator II will perform the following duties:

• Safely operate and maintain a variety of motorized medium to heavy-duty equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoes, single and tandem-axle dump trucks, skid steer, pothole patchers, asphalt rollers, snowplows, snow spreaders, and trailers for the maintenance and construction of roads (asphalt).
• Perform and conduct routine inspections and basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, reporting any mechanical issues for repair.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions, standard operating procedures, and safety guidelines in daily work activities.
• Performs a variety of related duties requiring physical labor and equipment operation skills to support infrastructure maintenance and construction projects.
• Comply with safety and drug testing requirements; this is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal and organizational policies.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by Virginia or North Carolina.

**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, short-term department needs, and/or City-wide emergencies). **

Must possess a Commercial Driver's License-Class A (VA or NC)

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

• $1,000 with first paycheck
• $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
• $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires completion of the tenth (10th) grade, plus two (2) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Driver's license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Preferences:
• Experience operating a variety of motorized equipment, including backhoes, single and tandem-axle dump trucks, skid steer, pothole patchers, asphalt rollers, snowplows, and trailers
• Knowledge of standard procedures and practices related to concrete work and general construction activities.
• Physically capable of lifting and moving materials weighing between 50 and 100 pounds in compliance with safety standards.
• Proficient with computers, including basic software applications relevant to equipment operation, maintenance tracking, and reporting.
• A valid Tank Vehicle Endorsement, meeting regulatory requirements for operating applicable vehicles.
• Ability to demonstrate both oral and written communication skills
• Experience Paving
• Valid Commercial Driver's License - Class A (VA or NC)
