POSITION SUMMARY:

The Accounting Assistant works directly with the Chief Financial Officer and Human Resources Director to provide bookkeeping support for the organization.  This role may help with many different accounting tasks from recording payroll to processing accounts payable and performing reconciliations.  The volume of work is highest during the summer months and the schedule is somewhat flexible.  Important traits are curiosity, attention to detail, teamwork, and a desire to improve within a culture of inclusion, professionalism, and mission-driven service while maintaining a positive attitude.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

• Entering invoices, coding, and preparing accounts payable for approval.  Reconciling vendor statements.
• Preparing reconciliations for bank, investment, and other balance sheet accounts. 
• Reviewing the reconciliations performed by others.
• Performing month end journal entries such as depreciation, revenue recognition, and expense allocations.
• Processing credit card expenditure receipts, coding and reconciling statements.
• Organizing documents for proper retention, including scanning and categorizing legacy hard copies.
• Providing support for data requests related to budgeting, forecasting, tax reporting, and the annual external audit.
• Other tasks as assigned by CFO/HR Director.
  

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Work is mostly in an office environment with heavy screen, keyboard, and mouse usage.  May occasionally assist in an outdoor setting for seasonal staff onboarding.
• Ability to sit for two or more hours at a time and lift up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to read hard copy and electronic invoices and documents.
• Minimal local travel for trainings, meetings, and events.

PAY SCHEDULE/INFORMATION

• Hours: Part-time, hourly (non-exempt) position. Work schedule should overlap heavily with standard business hours, but may be customized.  During the school year, a schedule of 10-16 hours per week is anticipated.  During the summer months, hours may be up to 30 per week.  Some work may be completed remotely, though physical presence in the office is expected for the majority of the assignment. Unpaid leave is available with prior approval.
• Compensation: $16 to $20 per hour, depending on education and experience. As a part time role, this position is not eligible for benefits other than a complimentary individual YMCA membership.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma and either two years of post-secondary education in a related field or two years of bookkeeping experience.
• Proficiency with Excel and ability to learn accounting software (QuickBooks).  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe, and general office equipment.
• High integrity, sound judgment, and effective communication skills.
• Willingness to dive in and learn along with the wisdom to ask questions. Teamwork mindset and desire to serve the community.
