Wastewater Collection Technician

Under general supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, performs a variety of wastewater collection related activities including operation of aseptic pumper truck to support the septic system maintenance program. Operates heavy vacuum truck, as well as other CDL vehicles, to perform wastewater collection system maintenance including sewer line cleaning. Maintains Community sewage lift stations. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and is considered DRIVING, subject to working on call and weekend hours.

• Knowledge of septic system installation and repair procedures and practices, including equipment and materials used.
• Knowledge of safety hazards, procedures and equipment used when working on or near underground utility lines.
• Knowledge of general procedures and standards followed in operation of aseptic pumping truck.
• Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of wastewater collection systems, lift stations and other wastewater conveyance systems.
• Knowledge of routine equipment preventive maintenance procedures for the wastewater industry.
• Knowledge of pumps and pumping systems.
• Knowledge of confined space entry and the methods used to complete tasks involving these areas.
• Knowledge of proper handling procedures and hazards associated with working with chemicals, acids, and other hazardous materials.

• Skill in safely operating a variety of equipment, such as (but not limited to) truck, flatbed truck and small cranes and lifting devices.
• Skill in operating hand tools, such as (but not limited to) shovels, crowbar, hammer, chisels, 16-in paddle with 8-foot handle, rubber wheeled dolly, etc.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with customers and other staff.

• Ability to work in weather-exposed situation and in confined spaces.
• Ability to work with raw sewage and chemicals.
• Ability to pick up and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet.
• Ability to work safely doing physical labor around septic systems.
• Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
• Ability to properly use face masks (shields), rubber gauntlet gloves, and properly handle chemicals required for the job.
• Ability to utilize high pressure water/vacuum excavation equipment.
• Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to chemicals, mechanical and hand tools, materials and equipment, and to otherwise physically perform and complete septic tank pumper truck driver tasks.
• Ability to provide educational materials to customers.
• Ability to work from a schedule and to be on-call in order to respond to emergency service/repair calls at anytime and under a variety of weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and at least two (2) years of full-time work experience with wastewater collection and/or septic systems. At least one year of experience operating heavy vacuum truck, high velocity sewer cleaning equipment, or septic pumper truck. Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered. Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Class A CDL preferred.
• ADEQ or ITCA Grade I Wastewater Collection Certification preferred.
• Ability to work non-standard, flexible shifts and respond to after hours on-call emergencies.

• Ability to work safely near automobile traffic, underground utility lines, and with exposure to excavations and trenches.
• Ability to work in confined spaces, under heavy physical exertion, and various weather conditions.
