After School Program Manager
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Recreation oversees and directs the planning, organizing and implementation of education services for children. These services contribute to the increased social emotional competencies of children increased academic enrichment opportunities and the recognition and enhancement of parents as the primary educators of their children. Responsible for the City's after school and summer programming, curriculum development, staff training and professional development. Work involves ensuring program sites provide quality and measureable academic help, enrichment and recreational opportunities, and character education for youth who attend. Work is performed with considerable professional independence in accordance with policy and accepted practices in the field of after school programs. Supervision is exercised over assigned staff.
Essential Functions:
- Deliver pre-service and monthly professional development session to all staff to insure quality programming.
- Assists in preparing reports to the Afterschool Advisory Board.
- Supervises afterschool site coordinators and serves as the assistant to the Assistant Director of Recreation.
- Assists in the completion of evaluation of the performance of afterschool and summer staff and annually thereafter.
- Assures that files and documentation are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained.
- Ability to develop positive relations with parents and develop parent engagement strategies.
- Works with the Assistant Director to develop and oversee program branding and promotional strategies.
- Develops innovative, project-based, after school curriculums and activities that support and develop academic achievement and character development for all students.
- Collaborates and communicates with school principals and day-school teaching staff to develop after school programs that integrate and promote shared learning goals and support strategies.
- Ensures program sites provide quality and measurable academic help and enrichment opportunities that address student's multiple needs and learning styles so all can experience success.
- Provides programs that address appropriate grade-level state and local standards to support student's performance and achievement.
- Assists individual staff members in identifying their training needs and improving their knowledge base and abilities.
- Assist the Assistant Director of Recreation in recruiting, interviewing and orienting staff, providing them with guidance as needed.
- Works with district and school principals to obtain necessary supporting data for program evaluations and applications for grant funding.
- Researches, collects data and writes new and continuation grants for sustainability of out-of-school time programming. Performs outreach to community and business leaders for in-kind support and funding.
- Participates in budget planning, oversees expenditures and ensures programs are managed with fiscal responsibility.
- Conducts, prepares and shares pre and post evaluations with staff for reflection and program improvements. Summarizes program site evaluations for mid-and-annual reporting to MA ESE and other funders.
- Participates in community outreach, serves on boards of various out of school time organizations, mentors other state-wide 21st CCLC, and attends DESE professional development to share information and learning with program staff.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Analytical skills to review data on students and adjust the curriculum to suit their learning styles and abilities.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)to explain the curriculum to staff, parents and students.
- Possess strong decision-making skills to make informed choices on the selection of textbooks, curriculum and instructional methodologies.
- Strong background in and understanding of project-based learning strategies.
- Knowledge of the grant development and writing process.
- Knowledge of national and state educational trends and standards.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and meet changing schedules and demands.
- Willingness to use research based intervention strategies.
- Committed to provide timely information to parents and students.
- Understand the goals and requirements of the School Improvement Plans, MA Curriculum Frameworks and MCAS Assessments.
- Considerable knowledge in maintaining and analyzing financial data for budget planning.
- Committed to the concept and value of out of school time programs and their potential for building upon classroom learning.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a supervising capacity.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in education, youth development, sociology, psychology or a related field.
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in an educational or out-of-school-time setting.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience planning, developing, and evaluating programs and working with community organizations.
- Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Experienced in grant writing, budgeting and oversight.
- Experienced in curriculum development and project-based learning strategies.
- CPR and First Aid Certification Preferred.
