Air and Waste Management Engineer (Environmental Engineer 3)

Description Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen. The Department of Ecology is hiring an Air and Waste Management Engineer (Environmental Engineer 3) within the Nuclear Waste Program. Location Richland Field Office, Richland, WA. Must live within commutable distance from the duty station. Schedule Telework and flexible schedule options; at least one day every two weeks required in the office. Schedules are dependent on position needs and may change. Responsibilities We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) to serve as an Environmental Engineer for the Hanford site‑wide Air Operating Permit and Notice of Construction (NOC) approval orders. In this role: Review and evaluate the Sitewide Air Operating Permit and its modifications. Assess new or proposed approval orders and prepare permit materials. Provide recommendations for enforcement actions in line with state and federal air, dangerous waste, and CERCLA regulations. Conduct engineering reviews of operation and maintenance requirements for Hanford waste sites and facilities. Represent Ecology as a subject‑matter expert and collaborate with national laboratories, state and federal agencies, and industry. Prepare inspection reports and recommend enforcement actions as part of air compliance inspections. Negotiate and develop permit requirements and appear on cleanup issue discussions with other agencies and the public. Qualifications Required: Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington or an equivalent state. Three (3) years of environmental engineering experience. Valid driver’s license. Meet U.S. Department of Energy badge requirements for Hanford Site access. Complete initial 40‑hour HAZWOPER training within six months of appointment and annual refresher training. Preferred: Experience performing environmental engineering reviews of plans and specifications, dangerous waste, water, and air permits, and CERCLA/MTCA remedial documents.
