This Phlebotomist I role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced environment. You will collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate documentation, and provide clear, courteous explanations to patients about the collection process. The position also involves troubleshooting, assisting with training, and making workflow improvement recommendations to support efficient and safe operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against provider scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory protocols.
• Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are placed in the appropriate collection containers or tubes and stored at the required temperature.
• Follow detailed procedures and protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during handling, processing, and transport.
• Update patient information and documentation accurately in the appropriate systems.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and safety standards.
• Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory result information as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and recommend improvements where appropriate.
• Support training efforts for new or less experienced staff by demonstrating proper collection and processing techniques.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draw techniques.
• Ability to perform blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy when checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and related safety standards.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting.

• Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
• Strong communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients.
• Ability to read, understand, and fully interpret physicians’ orders.
• Comfort with answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
• Capability to record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks according to protocol.
• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Strong organizational skills for managing multiple specimens, labels, and requisitions simultaneously.
• Ability to follow detailed protocols for packaging and transporting specimens while maintaining integrity.

The role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you will handle blood and other biological specimens daily. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various specimen collection containers and tubes. The environment requires strict adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, safety protocols, and infection control procedures. You will frequently use computers and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify orders, and manage documentation. The position involves regular interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, as well as answering telephone inquiries and communicating laboratory results. Work schedules may include standard clinical or laboratory hours, and you will participate in required annual department trainings to stay current with procedures and safety requirements.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fair Lawn, NJ.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
