Correctional Officer

$5,000 Signing Bonus . Entry-level correctional officer responsible for the discipline and security of an assigned post. Summary Statement Entry-level correctional officer responsible for the discipline and security of an assigned post inside and/or outside a secure facility. Duties include acquiring knowledge of rules, regulations, procedures and equipment through orientation and on‑the‑job training. Positions report to a technical supervisor. Essential Functions Maintain control of inmates while escorting individuals or groups within the prison. Keep accurate head counts of inmates in the assigned security post. Conduct periodic shakedowns of inmates and searches of inmates, visitors, employees, cell blocks and other structures for prohibited items. Operate manual and electronic locking systems. Enforce all rules, regulations and procedures affecting inmate discipline, security and safety. Observe inmate activities to detect unusual or prohibited behavior that threatens security or safety. Ensure inmates conform to proper standards of care for living areas and personal hygiene. Maintain custody of inmates during transport to other institutions and in the community for court appearances or appointments. Prepare and maintain a daily log and routine reports using an automated system. May be required to train and care for K‑9, feeding, grooming, kennel maintenance. May enter institution as backup in riot control and shakedown activities and participate in pursuit of escapees. Job Requirements At least 18 years of age. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled). Additional Posting Information Selected incumbent’s annual base salary is $53,807.00. Upon completion of the Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) course, salary increases to $57,844.80. Eligible for a 5% shift differential for work between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must complete an eleven‑week Correctional Officer Basic Course at the Steven R. Floyd Sr. Training Academy. Course includes physical, classroom and hands‑on training in inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training. The Correctional Employee Initial Training (CEIT) program is approved by the Veterans Administration of Delaware State Approving Authority for the training of Veterans. Conditions of Hire Applicants must complete a criminal background check, physical ability test, psychological examination, pre‑employment drug test and medical examination. Conditional offers require the applicant to pay for the medical examination. Benefits Comprehensive benefit package available. Employees in a Correctional Officer series will be eligible to retire under HB363 after 25 years of pension creditable state service and at least 20 of those years as a CO series classified position.
