Crossing guards are needed for the 2026-2027 school year at various locations including Whitcomb Middle School, Richer Elementary, Kane Elementary, Jaworek Elementary, and Goodnow Elementary. Please include in your cover letter the location(s) you are applying to and the times you are available.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as staffing needs arise.

This is a part-time, hourly position with varying daily shifts during school days. Post assignments will have varied schedules based on school hours. Times will vary depending on school assignments.

Salary range is $23.00 per hour. For any current MPS employee, you will be paid your current school hourly rate up to $25 per hour. Morning shift is minimum pay of 1 hour, mid-day shifts combined are minimum pay of 1 hour, and afternoon shift is minimum pay of 1 hour.

A crossing guard's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the children crossing streets on their way to and from school. School crossing guards oversee and control traffic flow around schools in the morning and at the end of the school day.

Directly responsible to the Director of Finance & Operations designee. Must also adhere to directives of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Marlborough School Committee. Must also comply with all directives from the Police Department.

Essential functions include creating gaps in traffic, projecting a positive public image, following basic principles of student safety, standing while children are present, reporting unusual situations, encouraging proper crossing behavior, deterring unsafe acts, informing motorists, observing and reporting hazards, and performing other duties as assigned.

Additional information includes arriving promptly, calling in advance if unable to cover, reporting injuries, being on time and neatly attired, refraining from certain behaviors, and not using certain items while on duty.

The work is well defined with detailed rules and procedures. Judgment involves choosing appropriate practices and guidelines. The work consists of simple, routine tasks with few variations.

Crossing guards may be stationed during school hours, special events, or whenever deemed necessary for public safety. Criteria include number of children, accident history, age of children, possible alternative routes, design of intersection, traffic speed, type of traffic control, width of intersection, volume of traffic, physical terrain, and other factors deemed by the supervisor.

Equipment provided includes a fluorescent/retro-reflective vest, fluorescent raincoat or wind breaker, stop paddle, and other necessary equipment.

Training includes field training by a School Resource Officer or another sworn officer for one week, instruction on traffic laws, and monitoring for safe and respectful performance.

Qualifications include the ability to work well with students, staff, and community members, good moral character, ability to operate independently and as a team, and use sound judgment in handling matters while maintaining a safe physical environment.

The work environment involves continuous presence of unpleasant elements such as noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Work is performed outdoors regardless of weather conditions.

Physical, motor, and visual skills required include sitting, standing, walking, stooping, arm raising, hand and eye coordination, finger dexterity, motor coordination, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
