Date: May 27, 2026 Requisition No: 876657 Agency: Department of Health Working Title: ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST II This position is an Environmental Specialist II in the Environmental Public Health program, responsible for conducting investigations and enforcement tasks. The role performs regulatory environmental inspections to ensure compliance with state and local laws, makes recommendations on permits, licenses, and approvals, and documents findings to support enforcement action. Work is performed under the supervision of the Environmental Manager – SES, requiring independent judgment, initiative, and excellent general business practices. The position is designated as sensitive and requires confidentiality in accordance with the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) Information Security Policy. The incumbent accesses the Environmental Health Database (EHD), Health Management System (HMS), and other systems to record inspection data, complaints, and corrective actions. The role also provides consultation to owners and operators on facility design and environmental health compliance. Inspections are conducted at public and private schools, assisted living and residential facilities, migrant labor camps, mobile home parks, and food‑service operations. The specialist investigates complaints of food‑borne illness, sanitary nuisance, and non‑compliance, performs follow‑up inspections, prepares technical reports, and may testify as an expert witness in administrative or court proceedings. Essential activities include: Conducting inspections and investigations for food‑service facilities, schools, health‑care, and residential properties. Collecting, interpreting, and analyzing scientific data and sample results. Preparing technical reports, notices, and correspondence supporting enforcement actions. Advising owners/operators and coordinating with federal, state, and local agencies. Providing public education through workshops and outreach activities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of physical and natural sciences and data collection methods. Ability to analyze scientific or technical data and prepare technical reports. Understanding of rules, regulations, and policies related to environmental programs. Ability to work independently, plan and organize work assignments, and communicate effectively. Proficiency with personal computers. Qualifications Certification as an environmental health professional (CEHP) with specialization in Food Hygiene (Chapter 381.0101 F.S.). Certification in child care, large family child care, and family child care programs. Educational credentials: bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a relevant physical or biological science, with a minimum of 30 semester hours of major coursework. Other Job-Related Requirements Work may include emergency duties and extended hours during crises. Valid driver’s license and compliance with safety equipment requirements (steel‑toe boots, hard hat, respirator). Capacity for extensive walking, bending, and work in hot conditions. Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Working Hours Daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., totaling 40 hours per week. The position requires daily in‑office or field work.
