Korean Foundation Professorship of Korean Studies

The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for the Korea Foundation Professorship of Korean Studies. This is a full-time tenured or tenure-track position (open rank). The position begins in August of 2027 subject to final budgetary approval. Compensation: $81,284 – $130,207 per year. Benefits information for this position can be found linked below: PROGRAM PROFILE The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, one of 22 departments at the college, is composed of twelve full-time art historians specializing in modern and contemporary art and design. Together with approximately 50 non-tenure-track faculty, the department currently offers 200 undergraduate and graduate courses, and mentors approximately 30 dedicated MA students in Modern and Contemporary Art History, undergraduate students pursuing either a dedicated BA in Art History or BFA with art history thesis, and dual-degree graduate students earning an MA in Arts Administration and Policy in conjunction with their MA in Art History. Further information about the department can be found at RESPONSIBILITIES Tenured and tenure-track faculty in Art History, Theory, and Criticism teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The successful candidate will contribute to the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism’s MA and BA programs in Art History, providing undergraduate courses, graduate seminars, and master’s thesis supervision. The candidate will also be an active participant in the education of studio artists, designers, architects, and arts professionals at the MFA, MA, and undergraduate degree levels, and will contribute to the vibrant and creative culture of a research oriented department in a prestigious college of art and design. In addition to teaching, this position shall assume a leading role in developing new academic courses, enhancing existing Korean studies coursework, and in the development of course materials, as well as in broader efforts to advance Korean studies at SAIC. The successful candidate will also participate actively in departmental and schoolwide service, including contributing to curriculum development, student advising, the assessment of student learning, committees, and other forms of shared governance. QUALIFICATIONS The Department of Art History invites applications for a scholar of Korean art history and visual culture. We seek a dynamic and intellectually engaged scholar whose research and teaching will contribute to the breadth and vitality of our programs in art history and visual culture. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Korean art history or a related field, or be ABD with a clear timeline for defense prior to the contract start date, and will demonstrate a strong record of, or clear potential for, scholarly research and publication. We welcome applications from scholars working across the full historical and disciplinary range of Korean art and visual culture, including, but not limited to, modern and contemporary art, architecture and design, film and media studies, and other forms of visual, material, and digital culture. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages questions, methodologies, or intellectual frameworks that connect Korean art and visual culture to broader transnational and global histories. Significant teaching experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to contribute to a diverse curriculum in art history.
