Financial Counselor

Job Details Title: Financial Counselor Location: Jobs Plus - Bronx, NY 10454 (Millbrook Community Center Program, Jobs Plus) Salary: $48,000 per year Classified as: Non-exempt FLSA Reports to: Assistant Director Summary East Side House (ESH) is a 501(c)(3) organization serving the South Bronx. It provides services to families, youth, seniors, and has a Jobs‑Plus program that offers workforce development, financial empowerment, and community building. The Financial Counselor works under the Assistant Director to manage program data, outcomes, and assist participants with debt, credit, savings, and financial education. Primary Responsibilities Maintain an active caseload and achieve outcome targets outlined in program contract deliverables. Conduct one‑on‑one interviews with Jobs‑Plus members to assess financial positions and behaviors. Help members decrease debt, increase savings, improve credit scores, open affordable bank accounts, and obtain appropriate tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Conduct follow‑up interviews to evaluate progress and program impact. Refer members to appropriate partners, track progress, and advocate as needed. Oversee and manage annual financial services events and initiatives such as tax services with ARIVA and Financial Literacy Month. Conduct outreach in the Mill Brook, Mott Haven, and Mitchel developments to promote membership and financial counseling services. Thoroughly document member meetings, referrals, and recommendations in the funder database. Conduct monthly seminars and workshops on personal financial education topics. Engage external financial services partners for referrals and collaborate with internal partners. Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to appropriate staff. Work with funders and the Office of Child Support Services to address wage garnishment and child support for members. Collaborate with Clinical and Wellness Coordinator and Assistant Director to host workshops for parents. Represent ESH and Jobs‑Plus at collaborative meetings as assigned. Participate in trainings, technical assistance, networking, and resource sharing opportunities. Carry out special projects and other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of experience in finance, financial education, financial planning, or a related field. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with a culturally diverse population. Strong presentation, leadership, and initiative skills with creativity and follow‑through. Excellent analytical skills. Strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets), and similar programs. Competencies Problem Solving / Analysis Communication Proficiency Customer Service Public / Community Relations Teamwork Orientation Expected Work Schedule Full‑time position, Monday through Friday 9a.m.–5p.m. with a rotation on the first Saturday of each month 10a.m.–3p.m. Hours may vary based on ESH needs. Required Clearances COVID‑Vaccine: All staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or obtain vaccination prior to the start date. Supervisory Responsibility None. Work Environment Business casual. The role is performed in a school office environment using standard office equipment. Travel Minimal expectations. Physical Demands Job duties are primarily sedentary, involving talking or hearing, sorting and filing, lifting light files, and bending or standing on a stool as needed.
