Summary The Locksmith is a position assigned to the General Support Shop - Engineering Service Line located at the VA Medical Center in Augusta - GA. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work at this level seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 50 pounds. The locksmith workers frequently stand, stoop, bend, kneel and work in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. Work is normally done inside in areas that are well lighted, heated and ventilated, occasionally outside in bad weather or in drafty, poorly lit areas. Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds, and other elevated areas where falling may be a hazard. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises and burns when using power tools and equipment. Work may be outdoors in inclement weather – subject to noise, dust and fumes related to this trade. Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted state driver's license. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required – your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include month and year start/end dates. Part‑time experience will be credited based on time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer and other relevant engagements. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be credited. Duties Major duties include – but are not limited to: Install and adjust a variety of commercially manufactured locking devices, including combination locks typically installed in safes, vaults, cabinets and chests. Install devices with dual locking capabilities, such as mechanical and electronic interaction with timing mechanisms. Set up coding systems for varying lock types and keyways, using software and technical manuals to ensure compatibility. Use arithmetic to configure coding systems, select appropriate pin sizes, and maintain facility key plans. Troubleshoot electronic key systems, including key failures, battery replacements and wall programmer outages. Install and maintain various remote‑controlled electronic and magnetic lock systems, and troubleshoot lockouts in mechanical security systems. Work on mechanical locking components of security or surveillance systems. Investigate repairs and rework locked mechanisms. Troubleshoot locking mechanisms that interrelate with equipment such as monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors and other equipment in complete security or surveillance systems. Disassemble locks and closely inspect for tool marks, abrasions and misaligned parts that may indicate tampering. Apply advanced neutralization techniques as required.
