Primary Performs routine and preventative maintenance to booster and lift stations to ensure the proper functioning of systems and equipment. Performs all major and minor overhaul and repair of pumps, equipment and machinery, including diagnostic testing as needed. Performs preventative maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, including the following: changing oil, greasing, maintaining operation of Omni alarm system on lift station, changing chlorine tanks, and checking and cleaning valves and pumps, as needed. Mows grass and weeds, removes trees and brush, and performs other related grounds keeping duties of a seasonal nature, including snow and ice removal. Evaluates equipment electrical problems; performs light wiring repairs and replacements, as required. Performs die and smoke testing to ensure proper working of systems; provides evidence of usage and placement of fault in disputes. Conducts inspections and responds to emergency service as needed. Performs general housekeeping/janitorial duties as needed. Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent or a combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Knowledge of the operations of wastewater lift stations and water booster station systems, preferred. Ability to perform both emergency and routine inspections of equipment and machinery, preferred. Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical failures. Knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures. Knowledge of and skill in the operation of department vehicles and related equipment. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle. Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement or permit required. If the incumbent holds a permit, they must be able to get Class B with airbrake CDL within the first 120 days of employment. Current Class A or B CDL, preferred.

Difficulty of Work and Personal Work Relationship

Incumbent frequently lifts vehicle components and equipment of moderate to heavy weight and often works in awkward and/or cramped conditions, performing many functions in a prone, stooping, or crouched position. Prolonged, intense physical strain is not associated with normal operations. Incumbent needs the ability to work overtime as directed. Required to be on call every four weeks. Incumbent performs most duties out of doors, in varying weather conditions, but the majority of duties are performed at booster and lift stations. The incumbent is frequently exposed to excessive noise, grease, dirt, poisonous gases and fumes. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure personal safety and the safety of others. The maintenance mechanic has a main responsibility with ensuring the proper operations of lift and booster stations, with nearly 70% of their time being spent on these duties. Lift stations are wastewater, and boosters are the clean water pumps. At times the mechanics will work with the public and other city departments to resolve disputes regarding sewage and water usage, along with determining any fault to the city in cases which repairs are needed for private homeowners that are the result of city error.

All new hires to the City for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) positions will initially start out at Step 1 of the assigned pay grade for the assigned position. Then after a 120 day probation, pay will increase to a minimum of a Step 2 for that position, however based on the new hire's skills, knowledge, abilities, and experience the pay could be moved to a higher step.
