Reading Teacher, Probationary - Middle School JobID: 1505 Position Type: Middle School Teaching/Reading Date Posted: 6/30/2026 Location: Eastchester Middle School Middle School Reading Teacher (Grades 6-8) Probationary Tenure Track Position Purpose Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Reading Teacher provides targeted literacy instruction and intervention to support students in developing foundational reading, writing, and literacy skills. The Reading Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, and support staff to implement evidence-based instructional practices, monitor student progress, and provide interventions within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The position focuses on accelerating student achievement by delivering individualized and small-group instruction while fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Essential Performance Responsibilities Provides evidence-based reading intervention to students individually and in small groups based on identified literacy needs. Delivers instruction aligned with district curriculum and the Science of Reading using structured, explicit, and multisensory instructional practices. Implements interventions within the district's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), including Tier II and Tier III interventions. Conducts ongoing progress monitoring using screening and assessment data to evaluate student growth and adjust instruction accordingly. Analyzes student performance data to identify learning needs, establish instructional goals, and inform instructional decision-making. Monitors student progress toward Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives, maintains appropriate documentation, and uses data to inform instruction and report progress. Develops and implements IEP goals and objectives related to literacy, participates as a collaborative member of the Committee on Special Education (CSE), and contributes to the development and annual review of students' IEPs, as appropriate. Prepares timely and accurate progress reports for students with IEPs in accordance with district timelines and state and federal regulations. Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, intervention outcomes, instructional strategies, and recommendations to support literacy development at home. Collaborates with classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading specialists, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, related service providers, and administrators to develop and implement instructional plans that support student success. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that address individual student needs and promote reading growth. Utilizes research-based instructional strategies to support students with diverse learning profiles, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners. Maintains accurate records of student assessments, intervention plans, progress-monitoring data, IEP documentation, and instructional outcomes. Participates in grade-level, MTSS, CSE, data team, and problem-solving meetings to review student progress and recommend instructional supports. Establishes and maintains a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment that promotes student confidence and academic growth. Continues professional growth by participating in workshops, professional learning opportunities, and current research related to literacy instruction and intervention. Administers district and state assessments in accordance with established procedures. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy instruction. Experience implementing interventions within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), including Tier II and Tier III supports. Experience with progress monitoring, analyzing assessment data, and using data to inform instruction. Knowledge of structured literacy and multisensory reading instructional approaches. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support student achievement. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of middle school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Qualifications Profile Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Literacy (Birth–Grade 12) required; or Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Students with Disabilities (All Grades or Grades 1–6/7–12, as applicable) with demonstrated experience in reading intervention, structured literacy, and multisensory reading instruction. Candidates holding dual certification in Literacy and Students with Disabilities are strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), progress monitoring, and evidence-based literacy interventions. Education Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Masters Degree preferred. Experience Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred. Employment Terms 10 month, full-time probationary position Salary range in accordance with the Eastchester Teachers Association (ETA) negotiated salary schedule; $63,872 – $88,401, step placement contingent upon prior related experience. Internal transfers will maintain their step and salary placement. Fingerprint Clearance Save Law: Effective July 1, 2001, Education Law §§305(30), 3004-b, 3004-c and 3035, as amended by Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and Part 87 of the Commissioner's Regulations require the Commissioner of Education to request a fingerprint-supported criminal history background check for applicants for certification as well as for prospective employees of school districts, charter schools and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES). The Commissioner of Education carries out these responsibilities through the New York State Education Department's Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability (OSPRA).
