Job Summary This position provides individualized, small-group, and large-group instruction to students based on each child's developmental level. The teacher works collaboratively with parents to support children in reaching their full potential. Employment requires successful completion of a physical examination and tuberculosis (TB) test prior to hire and every two years thereafter. Essential Responsibilities - specific to this job Plan, schedule, implement, and supervise a developmentally appropriate daily program for preschool children. Maintain an organized, safe, inclusive, and engaging physical environment that promotes learning. Supervise indoor and outdoor play to ensure child safety at all times. Consider and respond to each child’s unique cultural, socioeconomic, developmental, emotional, and physical needs. Support children in learning to cope with real-life situations and develop social-emotional skills. Assist children with self-help skills, including eating, dressing, and personal hygiene. Identify students with potential special needs; collaborate with and refer to appropriate personnel and support families experiencing challenges that affect the child. Conduct daily health observations, document concerns, communicate needed follow-up, and provide first aid when necessary. Complete regular home visits and hold parent-teacher conferences; maintain ongoing, open communication with families. Encourage family engagement through classroom participation, meetings, and community activities. Maintain accurate attendance records and conduct ongoing assessments of children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development. Support assistant teachers, aides, volunteers, and classroom staff; promote collaborative team teaching. Coordinate and share daily plans with assistant teachers and other staff working with children; encourage the exchange of ideas, strategies, and skills. Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development, training sessions, conferences, and workshops. Ensure classroom materials and equipment are accessible, developmentally appropriate, well-maintained, and safe; promptly report unsafe conditions. Maintain inventory of materials and resources. Implement Head Start Performance Standards, NAEYC best practices, Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards, and all program component plans. Eat breakfast and lunch with children, modeling positive conversation and using mealtime as an intentional learning opportunity. Assist in planning and conducting field trips that extend classroom learning. Prepare and submit required written reports, documentation, and assessments. Follow all program standards of conduct, including:

• Respecting the identity of each child and family;
• Refraining from stereotyping based on gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, or disability;
• Maintaining confidentiality of all children's, families', and staff members' information;
• Ensuring no child is ever left unsupervised;
• Using only positive child guidance strategies- never corporal punishment, humiliation, isolation, food-based discipline, or denial of basic needs.

Knowledge of Division mission, goals, structures, and early childhood instructional practices. Ability to apply current research and evidence-based theories to preschool instruction. Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to demonstrate excellent human relations skills. Ability to use multimedia and computer technology to enhance teaching and learning. Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons tailored to students' needs.
