Assistant Landfill Manager

Assistant Landfill Manager Overview Oversee and coordinate landfill operations and staff to meet performance goals while maintaining compliance with EPA and other regulatory agencies. Responsibilities Manage landfill operations, operate equipment safely in compliance with all regulations and company policies, and ensure safety of others. Execute and maintain operational goals and plans, including program requirements and labor hours. Determine employee responsibilities and scheduling. Assist with developing budgets, cost controls, and operational metrics. Coordinate landfill activities with other functions and suppliers. Review production and operating reports and drive resolution of problems. Conduct performance evaluations, monitor attendance, complete disciplinary actions and related documentation. Assist in planning and execution during construction of new landfill cells and maintain long-term plans. Maintain proper records and files, including compliance and personnel records. Oversee trash fill area operations and complete daily reports. Perform other duties as assigned. Specific to Boyd County – oversee hazardous waste management: Maintain understanding of hazardous waste accumulation areas and types of waste managed. Serve as Emergency Coordinator, assisting in emergency response activities. Ensure employees receive appropriate hazardous waste training. Verify completion and documentation of hazardous waste inspections. Oversee packaging, labeling, handling, and shipping of hazardous wastes, including signing manifests. Maintain hazardous waste documentation and records as required. Address and document corrective actions related to hazardous waste management. Supervisory Responsibility Manage 6‑20 employees. Does not oversee or direct other managers. Skills & Abilities Good verbal and written communication skills. Excellent customer relations and personnel management skills. Ability to read and understand landfill set grades using surveying instruments and GPS equipment. Experience in problem solving, leadership, quality management, planning, and organization. Specific to Boyd County – successfully complete U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Awareness, Security and Function Specific Training with renewal every three years. Specific to Boyd County – successfully complete hazardous waste management training within six months of employment and an annual review. Experience & Knowledge Waste industry experience preferred. Familiarity with EPA landfill requirements preferred. Heavy equipment operations experience preferred. Minimum 3 years landfill experience or equivalent. Surveying and GPS experience preferred. Must be able to pass state EPA certification. SWANA certification preferred. Physical Requirements Occasionally lift/carried/push/pull up to 100 lbs. Work outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions. Work in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter. Occasionally stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl. Occasionally climb or balance. Continuous standing, walking, or sitting. Additional Working Conditions Must be at least 19 years of age. Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas. Exposure to residential and commercial waste. Travel between offices as required. Work flexible hours; expected to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Available for 24‑hour emergency calls. Legally eligible to work in the United States. Valid driver’s license (if applicable). Must successfully complete pre‑employment testing. Must be able to read and speak English. Specific to Boyd County – occasional work around hazardous waste. Education High School diploma or equivalent (required). General Education Diploma preferred. Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred.
