SUPERVISING GOVERNMENTAL AUDITOR I

Supervising Governmental Auditor I Department of Social Services – Child and Family Services Division, California. Salary range: $7,530.00 – $9,823.00 per month (New to State candidates hired at minimum salary). Hybrid work and travel up to 35% required. Job Summary Lead a team of auditors within the Performance Audits Unit, conducting on‑site, desk, and hybrid fiscal and performance audits of nonprofit provider organizations that receive federal funding for foster children. Ensure audits comply with Government Auditing Standards, GAAP, and bureau policies while representing the Department in legal defense and stakeholder engagement. Responsibilities Supervise and develop audit staff, assign work, review audit outputs, and provide feedback to ensure quality and timeliness. Conduct fiscal and performance audits of nonprofit providers, determining compliance with state and federal requirements. Ensure audits adhere to Government Auditing Standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Represent the Department in defending protested or appealed audits before Administrative Law Judges. Plan, organize, and manage multiple audits simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining high quality standards. Prepare audit reports, present findings, and participate in entrance and exit conferences with professionalism. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including providers, program managers, and oversight entities, to promote accountability. Travel to audit sites as required, up to 35% of the time. Maintain ethical judgment and uphold professionalism in all audit activities. Use audit support software such as TeamMate and learn emerging audit technologies. Qualifications Strong knowledge of governmental accounting principles, audit standards, internal controls, and fiscal monitoring practices relevant to nonprofit and foster care organizations. Experience conducting complex fiscal and performance audits, including on‑site reviews, desk audits, and evaluation of outcomes. Ability to interpret and apply state and federal laws, regulations, and funding requirements (e.g., Title IV E, child welfare programs). Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple audits simultaneously while meeting deadlines. Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills, with the ability to identify risks, evaluate fiscal integrity, and develop well‑supported findings. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing audit reports and presenting findings. Experience collaborating with stakeholders to promote accountability and program integrity. Proficiency with audit support software (e.g., TeamMate) or a proven ability to learn new audit systems quickly. Willingness and ability to travel to audit sites as needed. Ethical judgment, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding public funds. Working Conditions This position may require 25% – 35% travel by airplane, train, automobile, or overnight stays. Hybrid work is available subject to Governor’s Executive Order N‑22‑25 and Department discretion.
