AMPATH Nepal In-Country Executive Director

DescriptionThe Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai and the Department of Global Health and Health System Design is seeking an experienced and dedicated leader to serve as the In-Country Executive Director for the AMPATH Nepal partnership. Based in Dhulikhel, Nepal, the In-Country Executive Director for AMPATH Nepal provides strategic, operational, and partnership leadership for the replication of the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) with our partners at Dhulikhel Hospital (DH), Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS), Mount Sinai, and the AMPATH Global Consortium. Together with our partners and Institute leadership, the In-Country Executive Director will work to advance our strategic priorities for the AMPATH Nepal partnership, expand resources, funding, and infrastructure to achieve program objectives, grow care, education, and research engagement, and work to advance and strengthen care systems to address community health needs and priorities in Nepal. Serving as the primary in-country lead, the In-Country Executive Director will work to advance integrated programs in clinical care, education, and research. Working closely with Mount Sinai Departmental leadership, Nepalese institutional partners—including Dhulikhel Hospital and Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences—and the broader AMPATH Consortium, the Executive Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and periodically updating the AMPATH Nepal strategic plan and priorities. The role focuses on building and sustaining high-impact, bi-directional partnerships; expanding faculty and trainee engagement; and fostering a coordinated, long-term platform for global health collaboration aligned with AMPATH’s principles and values. In alignment with these values, the Executive Director is expected to advance initiatives that improve clinical care and access to care, supported by mutually beneficial, collaborative research and educational opportunities. In addition to partnership development, the In-Country Executive Director oversees program execution, resource development, and operational compliance across U.S.- and Nepal-based activities. This includes assisting with fundraising strategy and donor engagement to ensure sustainability; supervising and mentoring faculty, staff, and trainees; implementing partnership agreements; ensuring effective oversight of in-country personnel and programs; and overseeing safety, security, and emergency response coordination; and overseeing administrative, budgetary, and operational program implementation in Nepal. The role also encompasses leadership in grant development and the design and oversight of trainee exchanges and educational initiatives. The In-Country Executive Director is accountable for tracking and reporting on key performance metrics—including funding, participation, scholarly output, and care impact—and for leading annual planning and budgeting processes to support the continued growth and effectiveness of Mount Sinai’s global health efforts in Nepal.Highly competitive candidates will have a clinical care background focused on delivering care in low-resource settings to underserved communities. Successful candidates will commit to a minimum two-year term of service in Nepal. The selected candidate will be appointed as faculty in the Department of Global Health and Health System Design at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Candidates with multiple clinical and/or academic specialties will also be considered for joint primary or secondary faculty appointment in relevant clinical and/or academic departments at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Faculty rank will be commensurate with the individual’s qualifications and the duration of their commitment.ResponsibilitiesPartnership Development & Administration (45% FTE*)Leads the development and implementation of Mount Sinai’s programs and strategy to support the Mount Sinai-led AMPATH Nepal partnership, on the ground in Nepal and in collaboration with Departmental leadership and Nepalese counterparts. Directs efforts to grow engagement within clinical areas of focus as outlined in the AMPATH Nepal strategic plan. Oversees process to update AMPATH Nepal strategic plan at least every 5 years.Collaborates with the Director of Operations and Global Partnership Development, Mount Sinai’s Fund Development Team, Nepalese counterparts, and program staff, to develop and implement a resource development strategy to ensure AMPATH Nepal has the resources, funding, and support to achieve its strategic goals and objectives and sustain the partnership.Convenes regular meetings of stakeholders engaged in care, research, and education activities through the Nepal partnership with the goals of: Strengthening Mount Sinai faculty and trainee collaborative engagements with our partners in Nepal;Growing a cadre of Nepal-focused global health faculty to support global health care, education, and research engagements in Nepal;Establishing a coordinated strategy for long-term engagement with Nepalese partners consistent with the AMPATH partnership model, principles, and values; and Fostering collaboration among Mount Sinai, Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, the AMPATH Consortium, and community and government partners to support care, education, implementation research, and health program development.Supervises and mentors Mount Sinai and AMPATH Consortium in-country clinical and academic leads, faculty, students, staff, and other AMPATH or Mount Sinai personnel engaged in Mount Sinai-led AMPATH Nepal partnership activities in Nepal.Ensures compliance with applicable institutional policies, government regulations, partner expectations, and operational standards.Ensures all necessary partnership agreements/MOUs are in-place with partners in Nepal, Mount Sinai, and the AMPATH ConsortiumIn alignment with the AMPATH Nepal Emergency Response Plan, serves as primary contact in the event of an emergency, supports emergency response training and preparedness for in-country team, and oversees management of emergency preparednessOversees annual planning, budgeting, and reporting for the AMPATH Nepal Partnership teamParticipate in relevant AMPATH leadership meetings as the in-country consortium lead. Liaise with AMPATH Consortium stakeholders to support consortium engagement in AMPATH Nepal.Establishes, develops, and maintains partnerships with internal and external program stakeholders to support and facilitate the successful implementation of program objectives.Provides leadership to the AMPATH Nepal partnership team guiding program implementation and providing clarity on program priorities, deliverables, and timelines.Oversees the management and implementation of program budgets in Nepal including compliance and reporting.Presents program overviews, progress reports, and proposals to key stakeholders and senior government officials in Nepal and the US.Maintains effective and constructive communications with Institute and Department leadership and other key stakeholders.Ensures all program personnel understand their responsibility to operate in accordance with the Department and Institute’s vision, mission, and values, standards for equity, and policies and procedures, and ensures all program personnel fulfill their individual responsibilities for upholding these values, standards, and policies. Advises and supports the implementation of communications strategies for the AMPATH Nepal Partnership including the development of program reports, marketing materials, and materials used for outreach and program implementation.Manages direct reports ensuring individual performance goals and responsibilities are met.Advises executive leadership on in-country strategy, operations, security, and other strategic considerations critical to achieving program objectives.Other activities as assigned.Clinical Service in Nepal (10% FTE)Supervise clinical officers, nurses, registrars, and fellows within host clinical department(s) at Dhulikhel Hospital or its clinical sites Provides relevant consultation to providers clinical sites.Teaching (10% FTE)In collaboration with the Director of Global Health Education, the Director of Operations and Global Partnership Development, relevant team leaders and other personnel, and Nepalese counterparts, oversees trainee rotations, bilateral exchanges, and in-country activitiesServe as visiting lecturer at Dhulikhel Hospital and/or Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences in host clinical or academic department(s), e.g. Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, etc. Supervise and mentor Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai fellows, residents, and medical students on global health electives in Nepal.Oversees AMPATH Nepal’s orientation and scheduling of visiting Mount Sinai and AMPATH Consortium faculty and trainees.Participate in the call rotation alongside other AMPATH Nepal In-Country Leads, responding to trainee and other visitor issues that arise.Research & Scholarly Work (10% FTE)Develop a targeted area of scholarship (research, education, clinical, QI) in area of interest.Collaborate/consult Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, and AMPATH faculty on research, quality improvement, and program development projects.Clinical Service in New York (25% FTE):The AMPATH Nepal In-Country Executive Director will support up to 25% of their full-time effort through clinical service within the Mount Sinai Health System or one if its clinical partners in New York City. Clinical service assignments will be aligned with candidate clinical specialties and organized in consultation with relevant clinical department or division leaders to determine specific assignments and clinical schedulesClinical service at Mount Sinai will be at the discretion of the relevant clinical department(s), e.g. Department of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, etc., and is contingent on meeting all licensure, credentialling, and requirements for clinical employment Clinical service at Mount Sinai will be at the discretion of the relevant clinical department and/or division leaders and coordinated through the Department of Global Health and Health System Design.Appropriate alternative clinical opportunities within the Mount Sinai Health System or our NYC Health + Hospitals partner, Elmhurst Hospital, will be identified for candidates from other specialty backgrounds. General Skills & CompetenciesHighly competitive candidates will have:A minimum of 5 years’ experience leading global health program implementation, clinical care delivery, health systems strengthening, health worker development, community-based health, health research, or other relevant global health programs in resource limited settings. A demonstrated track record of working in diverse global health settings.Excellent management and communications skills, strong interpersonal skills, cross-cultural understanding, diplomacy and outreach skills to establish and maintain positive working relationships with host partners, donors, and other stakeholdersStrong previous experience living and working on donor-funded health and development initiatives in South Asia strongly preferred. Strong language skills (preferably bilingual in English, Nepali, Hindi, or Bengali) preferredAbility to live and work in NepalQualificationsMedical (MD or equivalent), advanced graduate degree (Ph.D. or equivalent), or equivalent experience requiredFellowship training in a relevant medical specialty strongly preferredAdvanced degree (MPH, MSc) in public health or related field strongly preferredDemonstrated experience and understanding of health system and care delivery structures, academic medicine and research, program development, monitoring and evaluation, and systems strengthening and improvement is highly desiredDemonstrated experience teaching and training multidisciplinary learnersSalary & BenefitsCompensation range from 180K to 228K (not including bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits)Salary Disclosure Information: Mount Sinai Health System provides a salary range to comply with the New York City law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.
