Senior Employment Counsel
$200k - $240kjobgether
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Employment Counsel based in United States.
This is a senior in-house legal opportunity focused on employment law within a fast-growing fintech environment.
You will serve as a strategic advisor to the People team across the full employee lifecycle while owning employment disputes and compliance risks.
The role spans a multistate U.S. workforce, requiring strong expertise in California and broader federal, state, and local employment requirements.
Beyond employment law, you’ll have the opportunity to expand into privacy, litigation, regulatory matters, ERISA, commercial contracts, and other areas as business needs evolve.
You’ll work directly with senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders, translating complex legal developments into practical, business-focused guidance.
As part of a scaling legal team, you’ll operate with substantial autonomy and help build processes, policies, and legal infrastructure for continued growth.
This role is especially well suited to a curious, highly adaptable lawyer who combines deep employment expertise with strong business judgment and genuine AI fluency.
Accountabilities:
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to the People team across hiring, performance management, corrective actions, terminations, reductions in force, accommodations, leaves, compensation, contingent workers, and sensitive employee matters.
- Own employment disputes from initial claims through resolution, including pre-litigation matters, demand letters, administrative charges before the EEOC and state agencies, settlement negotiations, and employment litigation.
- Direct and manage outside counsel on employment disputes, ensuring effective strategy, communication, and cost management.
- Oversee internal employment investigations involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, whistleblower concerns, and policy violations.
- Advise on employment-law compliance across a multistate U.S. workforce, with particular depth in matters involving non-exempt employees and California employment law.
- Monitor federal, state, and local legal developments and translate emerging requirements into practical recommendations that reduce business and employee risk.
- Advise on employee and HR data privacy and information security, including the collection, use, storage, and protection of personnel information.
- Draft, review, and negotiate employment-related documentation, including offer letters, employment agreements, separation and severance agreements, confidentiality and intellectual property agreements, and equity-related documents.
- Partner with the People team to develop and maintain employment policies, handbooks, compliance procedures, and risk-mitigation practices.
- Develop and deliver employment-law training for People team members, managers, executives, and other business stakeholders.
- Provide legal support beyond the core employment portfolio, including privacy and information security, non-employment litigation, regulatory inquiries, ERISA and benefits, commercial contracts, and marketing and advertising matters.
- Support government regulatory inquiries and examinations, working with external counsel when appropriate.
- Assist with active litigation and disputes, including document collection, productions, communications, and coordination with outside counsel.
- Review commercial agreements and marketing materials and provide practical legal guidance across the broader business.
- Use AI tools and emerging technologies as an integral part of legal research, drafting, analysis, workflow design, and problem-solving while exercising sound judgment around quality, confidentiality, and risk.
- Help develop efficient AI-enabled legal workflows and share effective practices with colleagues to improve the broader legal function.
Requirements:
- JD from an accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 8–10+ years of legal experience with substantial, dedicated employment-law experience spanning both counseling and employment disputes.
- Demonstrated depth advising on employment matters involving non-exempt employee populations.
- Strong experience managing employment litigation and pre-litigation matters, including directing outside counsel and developing resolution strategies.
- Demonstrated expertise in California employment law alongside knowledge of broader federal, state, and local employment requirements.
- At least one prior in-house legal role is strongly preferred; experience within a startup, technology company, or other high-growth environment is a strong advantage.
- Experience advising on equity compensation and executive compensation.
- Strong ability to translate sophisticated legal analysis into practical, actionable advice for People teams, executives, and business leaders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence advising non-legal stakeholders and building trusted relationships across functions.
- Ability to work autonomously, prioritize competing demands, and exercise sound judgment in an ambiguous, rapidly changing environment.
- Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to learn and take ownership of unfamiliar areas of law rather than automatically referring matters elsewhere.
- Genuine AI fluency, including regular use of AI tools for legal research, drafting, analysis, and workflow development.
- Ability to critically assess AI capabilities and limitations and apply AI thoughtfully while maintaining appropriate legal, privacy, confidentiality, and quality standards.
- Highly organized and process-oriented, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to rigorous documentation and high-quality work product.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and willing to contribute across the legal function rather than operating strictly within a defined specialty.
Benefits:
- Annual base salary range of $200,000–$240,000 , with actual compensation determined by geographic location, relevant skills, and experience.
- Potential additional compensation through bonuses, equity, or other applicable incentive programs.
- Employer-sponsored 401(k) with a dollar-for-dollar match of up to 4% of compensation, immediately vested, with no plan fees.
- Comprehensive health insurance plans plus dental and vision coverage.
- Competitive paid time off and parental leave.
- Financial wellness support through access to digital tools, financial professionals, and resources for understanding equity and managing finances.
- Enhanced mental health support for employees and dependents.
- Fertility healthcare and family-forming benefits.
- Student loan planning and repayment resources.
- Monthly work-from-home stipend and quarterly lifestyle stipend.
- Remote-friendly work environment with opportunities for team-building activities and offsites.
- Opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven fintech business focused on expanding access to retirement benefits.
- Significant ownership, autonomy, and career growth within a scaling legal organization.
- Exposure to a broad range of legal, regulatory, privacy, and business matters beyond the core employment portfolio.
