The Police Recruit attends and successfully completes an approved Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified basic police academy training program; performs all related learning and testing activities; performs a variety of routine to complex field and administrative activities in support of police services and programs for the City's Police Department; provides comprehensive non-sworn staff support to Police Department supervisory and management personnel on a wide variety of law enforcement programs, projects, and services; responds to public requests and performs related duties, as assigned.Open until filled. $30.00 hourly plus benefits.Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will:Be a collaborative, inclusive, and encouraging team member.Be adaptable and able to work under stressful or difficult conditions.Be comfortable working in inclement weather conditions at all hours of the day and night, including on weekends and holidays.Able to keep calm and patient with members of the public in stressful or volatile situations.Be able to demonstrate independent judgment.Possess excellent people skills.Show dedication to the City of East Palo Alto and the community.Bilingual is highly desirable.Qualifications:Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:Education: Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth (12th) grade.Experience: No experience is required but experience in a law enforcement environment is desired.License and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by the time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.Special Requirements:Free from any disqualifications for employment including felony convictions Gov. Commission Regulation 1951Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) with a score of 330 or above Penal Code section 13510BenefitsDuring the academy, the following benefits will be available:For medical coverage, the City contracts with Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente. The city pays 100% employee-only Kaiser Coverage and 65% Dependent Coverage up to the Kaiser Coverage Plan. Dental insurance is through Delta Dental. The city pays the full cost for employees only. Long Term Disability, Life insurance $25,000.00 until successfully graduated from Academy then will increase to $50,000.00, CalPERS Retirement CalPERS Classic Members – 2.5% @ 55 formula Employee pays 8% employee contribution. CalPERS New Members—2% @ 62 formula Employee pays 7.75% employee contribution.* Three (3) year average final compensation, once graduated they go to the safety, State mandated sick leave which is one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, and Employee Assistance Program. After successful completion of and graduation from the Policy Academy, Police Officer Recruits who continue to meet the Employment Standards are eligible to be sworn in as Police Officers and begin the Field Training Program.After successful completion of and graduation from the Policy Academy, Police Officer Recruits who continue to meet the Employment Standards are eligible for Full-Time City employment status, increased salary, and benefits.About the Department: The City of East Palo Alto Police Department has built a strong partnership between the community and the department to help enhance public safety and improve the quality of life for the people who live and work in the City of East Palo Alto.
