Job Description

The QC Scientist II performs a broad range of qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical testing to support active pharmaceutical ingredients, starting materials, packaging components, and finished products in a regulated laboratory environment. This role focuses on analytical method execution and improvement, data integrity, and quality investigations, while working with advanced instrumentation such as HPLC, GC, and wet chemistry techniques in a fast-paced pharmaceutical manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical testing in accordance with compendial requirements and product specifications for active pharmaceutical ingredients, starting materials, packaging components, and finished products.
• Prepare samples, including dilutions and other sample preparation techniques, to ensure accurate and reliable analytical results.
• Conduct testing using HPLC, GC, wet chemistry, and other analytical methods, following established procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Perform peer review of analytical testing documentation, identify discrepancies, and work to resolve them in compliance with quality standards.
• Maintain laboratory data in an organized and traceable manner in laboratory notebooks, worksheets, and controlled documents.
• Re-validate chemistry methods as required, ensuring methods remain robust, accurate, and compliant with regulatory and internal standards.
• Author clear and concise technical reports to support analytical method improvements, investigations, and troubleshooting activities.
• Perform investigational and troubleshooting analyses, including advanced analytical techniques, to support approved commercial testing and resolve laboratory or production issues.
• Apply knowledge of critical functions and variables for each type of laboratory equipment and demonstrate strong instrument troubleshooting ability.
• Complete and conduct required training according to the laboratory curriculum and maintain up-to-date qualifications on relevant methods and equipment.
• Work independently while actively contributing to a team-based approach to accomplish assigned tasks and project objectives.
• Manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, effectively prioritizing workload to meet deadlines.
• Communicate findings, results, and issues clearly through strong written and verbal communication with colleagues across quality and manufacturing groups.
• Collaborate with quality teams to support investigations and continuous improvement activities related to analytical testing and product quality.
• Demonstrate sound scientific judgment and professional competency while working under supervision to execute and interpret laboratory work.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific field, with a preference for Chemistry or Biochemistry.
• 2–3+ years of industry experience in a chemistry laboratory environment.
• Hands-on experience with HPLC or GC; strong proficiency in at least one of these techniques is required.
• Experience working in a quality function and participating in quality investigations.
• Proficiency with sample preparation techniques, including dilutions and related laboratory practices.
• Experience working in a GMP and FDA-regulated environment.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment to accomplish assigned tasks.
• Ability to manage and work on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work with supervision while applying scientific judgment and professional competency in daily activities.
• Solid understanding of chemistry and biochemistry principles as applied to pharmaceutical quality control.
• Ability to troubleshoot laboratory instruments and methods using a structured, scientific approach.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with both HPLC and GC is highly beneficial, even though strong expertise in one technique is acceptable.
• BG in biochemistry or related disciplines supporting analytical testing of pharmaceutical products.
• Familiarity with quality control processes in large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
• Experience authoring technical reports and documentation to support method improvement and investigations.
• Comfort working across both quality control laboratories and manufacturing areas to support end-to-end product quality.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to organizational change and take advantage of growth and upward mobility opportunities.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality environment, with time spent primarily in the quality control laboratory and occasional work in the manufacturing area. You will regularly work with analytical instruments such as HPLC and GC, along with wet chemistry techniques, within a GMP and FDA-regulated setting that emphasizes data integrity, safety, and compliance. The standard schedule is first shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some flexibility. The position starts on a 5x8-hour schedule, and after completing initial training, there is an opportunity to move to a 4x10-hour schedule. Training will occur on first shift for the first one to two months. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
