JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of Dining Services leadership, the Dietetic Support Specialist will support the development and communication of nutritional and allergen information for menu items served in campus dining halls. This position offers valuable hands-on experience in institutional food service, complementing the nutritional analysis and administrative responsibilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Review and analyze menu items to identify nutritional content and potential allergens. Collaborate with culinary staff to ensure accurate labeling and communication of dietary information. Assist in the development of educational materials related to nutrition, wellness, and food allergies. Create, cook, and serve a healthy and tasty dish in the dining hall as part of a featured nutrition initiative. Participate in inventory and documentation of ingredients and recipes for nutritional tracking. Support customer service efforts and assist with student inquiries regarding dietary needs under supervision. Assist with data entry and administrative tasks related to menu management and food safety documentation. Maintain cleanliness and food safety standards in all food preparation and service areas. Work Schedule Work shifts will be assigned during regular Residential Dining operation hours, which are generally Monday through Friday from 8:00am and 5:00pm. Shifts may vary to include mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Occasional nights and weekends may be required to support special events. The work schedule is aligned with the CSULB Academic Calendar, with peak activity during academic semesters and reduced hours during academic breaks, depending on operational needs. The employee must be available to work a minimum of 12 hours during the academic semesters; however, work is activity-dependent, and there may be weeks with little or no scheduled hours Physical Demands The job will require the employee to work in an office environment while working at a desk and viewing a computer screen for long periods of time. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear and use office equipment within arm’s reach. Specific vision abilities are required, which may include close vision and ability to adjust focus. There will be time spent intermittently on their feet and moving around in a large building. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The employee must comply with the University’s rules and regulations as well as the Beach Shops. The employee is typically in a climate-controlled indoor environment within residential dining operations and occasionally has movement throughout the kitchen, with exposure to extreme cold temperatures in the refrigerator and hot/humid temperatures in the dish room. The employee is occasionally susceptible to oven, grill, knives, and other cutlery utensils. The employee will occasionally work with chemicals used in cleaning and sanitizing equipment and all kitchen areas. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience The employee must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units, and must be enrolled in a Dietetics, Nutrition, or related academic program. The employee must possess foundational knowledge of nutrition principles, including food allergies and dietary restrictions. Experience or a demonstrated interest in food preparation and culinary service is preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations The employee must have a California Food Handler Card or the ability to obtain a CA Food Handler Card within 30 days of employment. Knowledge and Abilities The employee deal must have strong communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-service mindset. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook is required. The employee should be capable of working effectively in a fast-paced environment while adhering to established food safety practices and maintaining high standards of service. The ability to understand and comply with University and Beach Shops policies and procedures is required.
