Materials Scientist for AI Training and Evaluation

Role Overview
Apply hands-on materials science judgment to help evaluate and improve advanced AI systems. Your expertise will inform the standards used to assess materials-focused reasoning, including decisions grounded in real processing, characterization, and performance constraints.
This is an ongoing talent-pool listing, not a currently guaranteed project assignment. Projects may begin on short notice, and qualified experts are contacted when a suitable opportunity becomes available.
Key Responsibilities
- Create materials science problems based on work you have performed, including the material system, processing history, target property, and a reference answer for evaluating model responses.
- Assess AI-generated structure-property reasoning, including whether microstructure supports the stated property, characterization evidence supports the conclusion, and proposed processing conditions are realistic.
- Identify cases where a proposed material may satisfy specifications in theory but fail in service because of fatigue, corrosion, thermal cycling, or manufacturing limitations.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in materials science or a related field, with research or industry experience.
- Recent hands-on experience processing and characterizing materials, with the ability to clearly explain the technical decisions you made.
- Strong written communication skills for documenting and explaining technical reasoning.
- Comfort working through ambiguous assignments and identifying unclear instructions.
Work Terms
- Remote, hourly engagement.
- Opportunities are project-specific. If selected for a project, the project listing will identify the rate, expected hours, and client.
- This listing itself does not issue acceptances or rejections. Contact may occur within a week or after several months, depending on available projects and fit.
Compensation
Past project rates have ranged from $60 to $120 per hour, based on project scope and depth.
Eligibility
Completing the domain-expert interview and joining all networks for which you qualify can improve matching prospects. A single registration makes you eligible to be considered across those networks.

- Your background will be verified and, if appropriate, added to the materials science talent pool for future project matching.
