Job Title: General Production Worker Job Description
The General Production Worker supports daily operations in a busy machine shop by assisting with material handling, basic machine operation, and quality checks. This role works closely with planer operators on the production floor, helping to process incoming raw materials, prepare finished products for shipment, and maintain a safe and efficient work area.
Responsibilities

• Provide general production support throughout the machine shop as needed.
• Work side by side with planer operators on the planer side of the shop to support their daily tasks.
• Receive and handle incoming raw materials, verifying proper weights and quantities.
• Perform basic quality checks on finished products to ensure they meet required standards.
• Operate a machine that straightens machined bars according to established procedures.
• Build wooden crates for shipping finished products safely and securely.
• Use a sander to remove rough spots and improve the finish on metal parts.
• Load and unload materials, parts, and products as part of the production process.
• Lift and move heavy items safely, following proper material handling practices.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, being mindful of steel scrap and shop debris.
• Follow all safety guidelines, including use of personal protective equipment.
• Collaborate with other team members on the floor to support efficient production flow.

Essential Skills

• At least 2 years of machine operating or heavy industrial experience.
• Prior manufacturing experience in a production or industrial environment.
• Ability to work safely in a steel or machine shop setting.
• Comfort with operating industrial machinery, including bar straightening equipment.
• Ability to perform basic quality checks on finished products.
• Capability to load, unload, and lift heavy materials throughout the shift.
• Willingness to work closely with planer operators and follow their direction.
• Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment such as sanders.
• Strong attention to detail when measuring, weighing, and inspecting materials.
• Reliability to work a first-shift schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a steel or machine shop environment is a strong plus.
• Comfort working in a smaller, hands-on production setting.
• Ability to build and assemble wooden shipping crates.
• Understanding of basic shop safety practices and use of PPE.
• No CNC experience required for this role.
• Willingness to work as the primary machinist among a small group of operators on the floor.

Work Environment
The role is based in a small machine shop that specializes in producing large metal parts used to bend steel. Most operators on the floor form large beams with specific designs, and there are about ten people working on the production floor. In this position, you serve as the primary machinist supporting their work. The environment is typical of a steel and machine shop: it can be dirty, with steel scrap on the floors and active heavy equipment. You work first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Steel toe boots are required, and the company provides safety glasses and ear plugs. The dress code is casual street clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, suitable for a hands-on industrial setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.
