The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Deputy Director, National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). NIDCD is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers (ICs) at the NIH, is a $534 million organization that conducts and supports biomedical research, behavioral research, and research training in the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. The Institute conducts and supports research and research training related to disease prevention and health promotion; addresses special biomedical and behavioral problems associated with people who have communication impairments or disorders; supports research evaluating approaches to the identification and treatment of communication disorders and patient outcomes; and supports efforts to create devices that substitute for lost and impaired sensory and communication function. To support its mission, the NIDCD has a workforce of approximately 263 staff, including FTEs, contractors, trainees, and Commissioned Corps Officers.
This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader to assist the Director, NIDCD, in providing strong and visionary leadership and strategic direction to an organization dedicated to developing research and education to reduce both the direct and indirect economic burden of communication disorders on individuals, families, and society, thereby improving the quality of life for people living with a communication disorder. The Deputy Director assists the Director with the oversight of seven NIDCD program areas and leads the administrative and scientific management of all NIDCD programs. This role strategizes and implements the Institute’s scientific policies and provides leadership oversight and guidance for NIDCD’s administrative policies, management, and operations. . . This position serves as a full Deputy to the Director, NIDCD, in the coordination of all activities related to the mission and function of the Institute, in the execution of the policies of the Director, and in the allocation of resources to carry out these policies. The Deputy Director will serve as the Director, NIDCD in the absence of the Director. More information regarding the NIDCD may be found:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the areas of supporting the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, language, and/or other related disciplines. The incumbent must be an experienced scientific manager with a broad medical and scientific background who is conversant with the mechanisms involved in accomplishing research that fall within the NIDCD portfolio, including clinical research and progress, and with the general area of biomedical research operations within the Federal government, states, universities, non-profit research institutions, and/or with industry. In addition, the individual must have demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the planning, design, and implementation of innovative strategies for directing biomedical research programs that are of national and international interest, scope, and impact. The incumbent must possess organizational and managerial skills, and negotiation skills with respect to complex, sensitive issues and can represent the organization at the highest levels within the government as well as with nationally and internationally recognized scientific leaders and high-level officials/representatives of academic, research, and other institutions and organizations, as well as professional and advocacy groups. A demonstrated capability to communicate effectively, maintain collaborations and networks, identify issues and develop resolutions, and present scientific information that will impact the Institute and external audiences is required.
This position requires the selectee to be a U.S. citizen and obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
SALARY/BENEFITS: The Deputy Director, NIDCD will be appointed at a salary commensurate with the selectee’s qualifications, experience, and NIH salary guidelines. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent).
