Senior Planner

Pay: $32.53 - $38.06 Salary Range: $67,656.48 - $76,860.35 Job Summary The Senior Planner performs advanced professional and technical land use planning work associated with community planning and development. The position requires experience working with multidisciplinary design teams, including developers, engineers, architects, etc. This position will require coordination with County departments, other local governments, and regional/State/Federal agencies. The employee represents the Department before the public, the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners. Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Reviews and facilitates complex development applications, including map and text amendments and rezonings. * Analysis of applications, drafting staff reports and presenting to the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners. * Researches codes and ordinances and prepares County initiated land use changes and text amendments. * Performs complex current and long-range land use planning analysis including updates of the Comprehensive Plan and the Land Development Code. * Performs specialized research and analysis in areas of land use, transportation, housing, population and emerging planning issues. * Provides technical guidance and information to the public and others regarding the development review process.

• Represents the Director in meetings before the public.
• In case of emergency or crisis situation (hurricane, flood, etc.) position is

required to respond/perform emergency and recovery duties as assigned by the County Manager or designee. * During an emergency or crisis situation, this position may be required to be present at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to provide assistance while activated. * Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Requirements * Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and two (2) years’ professional planning experience. OR * Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and four (4) years’ professional planning experience. OR * Bachelor’s Degree in a closely related field and six (6) years’ professional planning experience. * Certification: AICP Certification will count for two (2) years of the required experience for candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree. * Legal Knowledge: A proven, working knowledge of zoning principles, land use case law, and growth management frameworks in the State of Florida. * Helpful prior experience: Florida Growth Management regulations, local/state land use regulation, site plan review and GIS. * Licensure: Valid State of Florida Driver’s License with clean driving history. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and in graphic (map) form. Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employee’s normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency. Working Environment and Physical Demands Position consists mostly of sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing in an office environment. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time. The person in this position needs to be able to frequently move about inside the office to access files, documents and drawings, personnel, office machinery, etc. Employee frequently positions self in order to retrieve maps, drawings and documents from storage in low, confined areas and in high, precarious places. Operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. The person in this position frequently communicates with the Board, other County employees, contractors and the public at large regarding planning, development and zoning. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Must be able to perceive, inspect, assess, and compare data, including graphically (maps). Occasionally moves boxes, files, and/or large maps and drawings weighing up to 15 pounds. The position primarily operates in an indoor, office environment. Employee is subject to exposure to dust.
