Fleet Technician II

Diesel Technician II Pay: $27 per hour At First Student, our Technicians play a critical role in keeping our vehicles maintained, reliable, and safe for the students and communities we serve. As a Technician II, you will perform routine and advanced maintenance and repair work on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles. This is a hands‑on position for an experienced automotive or diesel technician who can complete repairs with moderate supervision, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and support preventative maintenance and inspection work. We are proud to offer: Competitive pay of $27 per hour Tremendous career advancement opportunities due to our strong presence across North America A positive and rewarding work environment Opportunities to develop advanced diagnostic and repair skills Support for obtaining CDL and ASE certifications The opportunity to work on a wide range of automotive and diesel systems Your Responsibilities As a Technician II, you will: Perform routine and advanced maintenance on buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues with moderate supervisionComplete repairs involving brakes, engine tune‑ups, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, and related systems Replace bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, filters, fluids, and other components Inspect tires and complete tire maintenance and related repairs Assist Technician III employees with preventative maintenance services, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections Remove and replace engines, transmissions, and differential assemblies under Technician III supervision Assist with road calls and emergency repairs as needed Identify potentially unsafe equipment and notify management of the issue and corrective action taken Review completed work before vehicles are returned to service and obtain approval when required Accurately complete work orders and document repairs, parts, and supplies used Maintain parts usage records and order repair parts from approved suppliers Safely move vehicles between parking, service, and work areas Repair and maintain shop tools and equipment Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment Clean vehicles when requested Provide informal guidance or support to Technician I employees Perform other duties as assigned What We Are Looking For Approximately three years of automotive or diesel repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience Intermediate mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability Experience completing mechanical repairs with moderate supervision High school diploma or GED preferred Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred Valid driver's license Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within three months of hire State vehicle inspection license where required ASE certifications preferred Ability to participate in the company's ASE testing program within one year of hire Ability to obtain three ASE certifications within 12 months of hire Knowledge of state DOT vehicle inspection and safety standards Working knowledge of computerized diagnostic and maintenance systemsAbility to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment Strong communication and customer service skills Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team Reliable and predictable attendance Personal mechanic tool inventory sufficient to complete assigned repairs Physical Requirements and Work Environment This position works in a maintenance shop environment that may include dust, dirt, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions. Technicians must be able to: Lift at least 50 pounds Work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions Work underneath vehicles using a mechanic's creeper Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions Safely operate vehicles, tools, and maintenance equipment This position is subject to applicable DOT drug testing and physical requirements.
