This position plays an important role in ensuring the quality of materials used in the construction and maintenance of Texas highways by performing laboratory testing and inspections on materials such as aggregates, flexible base, embankment, and concrete. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Material/Process Inspector IV Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Trains others and May Serve as Lead worker. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product. Essential Duties: The essential duties for the Material/Process Inspector III include: Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections. Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs. Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement. Maintains a diary of inspection or test details. Performs tests and inspection duties. Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements. Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. The essential duties for the Material/Process Inspector IV include: Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management Conducts safety and/or employee forum meetings. Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems. Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections. Trains and assists other inspectors and private sector employees and provides project specification information. Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations. Handles problem calls from producers, plant inspectors and construction project field personnel. Maintains a diary of inspection or test details. Maintains and calibrates equipment. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Education: Material/Process Inspector III or IV: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: Material/Process Inspector III: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.* Material/Process Inspector IV: 3 years in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.* *(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
