Counselor (2026 - 2027) (Lewis & Clark Elementary) Fort Zumwalt R‑2 School District LEWIS & CLARK ELEMENTARY - St. Peters, Missouri Job ID: 5696350 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Re‑Posted: May 12, 2026 5:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Job Title: Elementary School Counselor Reports To: Building Principal FLSA: Exempt Position Purpose/Summary: The purpose of the elementary school counselor is to help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible adults. Qualifications Qualified candidates must hold: 1. a valid Missouri School Counselor Certificate; 2. a master’s degree or equivalent with intensive coursework in the principles and practices of educational guidance, educational testing and measurement, counseling, the organization and administration of services, and the psychology of learning. Essential Duties Counsel students on an individual basis in personal problems related to attendance, home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment. Provide group counseling and classroom lessons for students and teachers. Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality. Collaborate with families and staff to support students with disabilities. Work to discover and develop special abilities of students. Participate in the transition between buildings. Provide applicable in‑service training for teachers and student teachers. Advise administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline. Interpret the school counseling program to the community. Interpret test results to parents, including results of the individual screening program, group achievement tests, and intelligence tests. Consult with parents and guardians regarding child development, socialization, and parenting issues in addition to academic concerns. Participate in the special education process. Serve as liaison and make referrals to agencies outside the school, such as the Department of Social Services, the courts, children’s division, psychiatrists, and counselors. Additional Duties Effectively communicate, verbally and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community. Provide for own professional growth through ongoing reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Any other duties assigned by the principal. Mental Demands An individual in this position must identify the needs and abilities of students and adapt instructional methods accordingly, read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures and forms, and governmental regulations and guidance. The position requires maintaining highly confidential information; communicating clearly, and reasoning to make appropriate decisions and solve problems in various situations with strong attention to detail. Physical Demands Regularly required to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may take place simultaneously, and read handwritten or printed material. Work Environment Work in a noisy and active school setting; occasionally required outdoors for short periods (e.g., loading and unloading students from district transportation). Terms of Employment Salary and work year will be in accordance with the current teacher salary schedule and the Professional Agreement. Days employed in excess of the established work calendar shall be payable at the employee’s regular daily rate.
