Overview Police Officer Entrance Examination - June 27, 2026. October 5, 2026, Academy. Starting Salary: $83,868.62 min - $107,039.97 max annually (Depending on Qualifications). Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications below that have been established by State of Texas, Chapter 143, Police and Fire Civil Service Regulations. Only those candidates passing the minimum qualifications and supplemental questions on the online application will receive an email from the Human Resources Department with further instructions and exam seat confirmation. A Police Personal History Questionnaire Packet will be emailed and due on the exam date prior to the examination. The MPD-PHS form should be downloaded and completed. Military Preference Candidates with prior military service will be asked to submit the following required document: Military form DD214 member 4 copy (if applicable). Five extra points will be added for those who have served 180 days of active duty, received an honorable discharge and make a passing grade (70 or better) on the written exam. Physical Agility Test (PAT) Testing location to be disclosed at a later time. After the Civil Service exam, those candidates with a passing grade of 70 or above will participate in a physical agility test on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Official college transcripts in a sealed envelope from the college or university will be required at a later date for candidates who pass both the written and physical agility exams. General Summary To perform a wide variety of tasks in support of law enforcement and crime prevention functions; to perform investigative work and other special assignments; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department. Supervision General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant. All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual. Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures. Prepare reports on crimes and activities; attend roll call, briefings and administrative meetings. Participate in firearms training to maintain proficiency and operate other applicable law enforcement equipment and weapons. Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and gain records and other data; write reports of arrests, investigations, and other law enforcement activities. Participate in a variety of law enforcement activities and programs including making arrests, issuing citations, appearing in court, conducting surveillance, apprehending offenders, and interviewing or interrogating persons relevant to investigations. Interact with citizens regarding crime and crime prevention; educate the public about crime prevention. Patrol areas; respond to alarms; enforce traffic and parking laws; respond to and investigate traffic accidents; assist motorists in distress; operate equipment as appropriate. Respond to emergency calls; participate in investigations involving crimes against persons or property; secure crime scenes; preserve evidence; direct traffic; maintain crowd control; interview witnesses and suspects; prepare field reports. Mediate civil and domestic disputes; confiscate and document illegal or found property; respond to emergencies including medical or disasters. Participate in technical investigative activities to identify and prosecute offenders. Other Duties and Responsibilities May participate in tactical operations, undercover operations, stakeouts and intelligence gathering. Preserve, evaluate and record physical and trace evidence; may administer polygraph tests; may participate in gathering information about gang-related activities. May prepare and process fingerprint cards; may catalog and file cards. May coordinate and present information to students or groups; prepare crime prevention information for media. May meet with school administrators and teachers about educational programs; interact with students involved in educational programs. May inspect home security systems; may conduct firearms and equipment training; may collect, package, transport, secure and inventory impounded property. May greet visitors to the department; process offense reports and related transactions; coordinate with other agencies as needed; perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Education Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications: Not less than 21 years of age at the next Academy start date (October 5, 2026). Lateral candidates must be not less than 21 years of age. Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen. Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Education and Experience Requirements Have successfully completed 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university in any subject, not counting remedial courses or grades below C; or Have completed a minimum of 2 years of patrol and/or investigative experience as a full-time commissioned police officer; or Have completed a minimum of 2 years of active military duty with an honorable discharge; or Have completed a minimum of 18 months of full-time employment with the City of Mesquite Additional Education Details An accredited college or university must be accredited by one of several listed agencies; coursework from a foreign college or university will be reviewed for equivalence. Additional Requirements Vision: 20/70 uncorrected in each eye, with correction to 20/20; no color blindness. Hearing: average hearing loss in the unaided better ear not exceeding 40 dB at specified frequencies when using calibrated equipment. Candidates must be mentally alert, able to work with others, and in excellent physical condition. Must participate in and pass a qualifying physical ability and medical examination, including drug testing. Licenses and Certificates Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver\'s license. Possession of or ability to obtain Peace Officer certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCLEOSE). Legal qualification to possess firearms and ammunition. Disqualifying Factors Marijuana use beyond limited experimentation within two years prior to testing. Any use or possession of cocaine within ten years of application and not more than three times.
