Perform all duties normally associated with employment as a licensed police officer; including preventive patrol, arrest, search and seizure, traffic enforcement, crash investigation, public safety and service, investigation of criminal incidents, and maintaining public order on the university campus and surrounding area. Work involves patrolling day and night all campus areas, buildings, and parking lots. Officers must exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with violators of laws and university regulations. Officers may be required to work special assignments, special events, or be on call. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conduct regular patrols inside and outside buildings, parking lots, and around campus grounds to watch for criminal activity, unsecured buildings, fires, and any other unusual conditions or irregularities. Investigate reports of criminal behavior and violations of university regulations. Arrest violators and file appropriate charges when action is appropriate. Issue citations for parking and traffic violations. Conduct traffic accident investigations. Prepare written and oral reports on completed investigative activities and calls. Testify in criminal/civil court, administrative hearings, and other required venues. Enforce traffic laws and direct traffic on area public streets. Protect lives and property. Execute other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or supervisory personnel. Adhere to safety and security measures appropriate to the work performed and supervised. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent. At least 20.5 years of age at time of application. U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States. If a legal permanent resident, an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States with at least two years of service before discharge and evidence satisfactory to the commission that the person has applied for United States citizenship. Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical organizational infrastructure related to this role. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics. Physically able to perform police officer duties. Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License or obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Able to work long or irregular hours, on various shifting schedules, sometimes under severe emotional stress and inclement weather. Exercise good judgment and use tact and courtesy when working with the public under frequently stressful conditions. React quickly and effectively in emergency (high-stress) situations. Demonstrate professional demeanor and excellent oral communication skills. Formulate solutions to problems in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training. Understand safety and security precautions appropriate to the work performed. If lateral entry, be currently employed as a police officer in Texas or another state or federal jurisdiction acceptable to the university, or have less than a twelve (12)-month break in service. Operate a computer with a general understanding of application software and the Internet. Use Microsoft applications effectively. Communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in business, criminal justice, sociology, computer science, or a related field. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Required License, Registration, and Certifications Active peace officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Reserve officer status does not count as active law enforcement experience. Physical Requirements Move about to accomplish tasks or move from one work site to another. Move self in various positions to perform tasks in tight and confined spaces. Operate machinery and/or power tools. Operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Repeat motions that may involve wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Perform sedentary work that primarily involves sitting or standing. Communicate with others to exchange information. Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like. Lift and move objects up to 20 pounds. Lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Environmental Hazards Low temperatures. Noisy environments. Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. Small and/or enclosed spaces. Elevated temperatures. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
