Position Overview The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for the position of Police Officer II. This position performs all duties normally associated with employment as a licensed police officer, including preventive patrol, arrest, search and seizure, traffic enforcement, crash investigation, public safety and service, investigation of criminal incidents, and maintaining public order on the university campus and surrounding area. Work involves patrolling day and night across campus areas, buildings, and parking lots. The UNT Dallas Police Department provides law enforcement and security services for the University of North Texas at Dallas Main Campus and The College of Law. Police Officers must exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with violators of laws and University regulations. Police Officers may be assigned to special duties or events or be on call. Responsibilities Conduct regular patrols inside and outside of buildings, parking lots, and around campus grounds to watch for criminal activity, unsecured buildings, fires, and other unusual conditions. Investigate reports of criminal behavior and university regulations. Arrest violators and file appropriate charges when warranted. Issue citations for parking and traffic violations. Conduct traffic accident investigations. Prepare written and oral reports on completed investigative activities and calls. Testify in criminal/civil court, administrative hearings, and other required venues. Enforce traffic laws and direct traffic on area public streets. Protect lives and property. Perform other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or police supervisory personnel. Observe safety and security measures appropriate to work performed. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma/GED or equivalent. Must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of application. The State of Texas requires all peace officers to be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States. If a legal permanent resident, the applicant must be an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces with at least two years of service before discharge and must present evidence satisfactory to the commission that citizenship has begun. Employees in this role may be responsible for researching or accessing critical organizational infrastructure and must maintain the security and integrity of that infrastructure. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Be of good moral character; provide acceptable character references. Understand and abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics. Physically able to perform police officer duties; possess a valid Texas Driver's License or obtain within 30 days of employment. Ability to work long or irregular hours, on various shifts, sometimes under stress and in inclement weather. Demonstrate good judgment, tact, and courtesy when interacting with the public; react quickly and effectively under emergency situations. Effective oral and written communication; ability to formulate solutions in accordance with statutes and training. Proficiency with computer applications and basic Internet usage. Lateral-entry candidates must be currently employed as a police officer in Texas or another jurisdiction acceptable to the university or have less than a 12-month break in service. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in business, criminal justice, sociology, computer science, or related field. Bilingual in English/Spanish. Required Licenses/Certifications Active peace officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Reserve officer status does not count as active experience. Intermediate Police Officer License; meet UNT Dallas Police Officer classification requirements; and possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities described herein. Climbing stairs and ladders; moving about to accomplish tasks; lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds; up to 50 pounds in some cases. Moving and positioning body; operating machinery, power tools, and motor vehicles as required. Repetitive motions involving wrists, hands and fingers. Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. Environmental Hazards Elevated temperatures; exposure to fumes or airborne particles; exposure to moving parts or vibration; low temperatures; noisy environments; outdoor elements (precipitation and wind); small or enclosed spaces.
