Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg/Critical Care Unit

Job Overview

The Med Surg/Critical Care Unit is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to provide individualized nursing care for critically ill patients. This role involves assessment, monitoring, and responding to the needs of adolescent (16+) through geriatric medical and surgical patients in an intensive care environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver individualized nursing care to critically ill patients.
• Conduct thorough assessments and utilize strong critical thinking skills to analyze data and respond to changes in patient conditions.
• Interpret and act upon hemodynamic monitoring results.
• Anticipate and manage patient complications and crises effectively.
• Utilize technology to enhance quality patient care.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members, delegate tasks, and supervise unlicensed personnel.
• Communicate effectively with peers, healthcare workers, and patients or families to resolve conflicts.
• Supervise nursing students during their training assignments, as needed.

Equipment Used

• EPIC One Chart computerized charting system.
• PLUM IV "smart" pumps.
• Central lines, arterial lines, ventilators, and IABP.
• Overhead patient lift systems.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in Critical Care Unit (CCU).
• Experience in Med/Surg, Pediatrics, and Emergency Department settings is a plus.

Licenses and Certifications

• Must possess a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Dakota or a multistate compact RN license.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required.
• CCRN and/or TNCC certifications are preferred.

Shift Details

• This position requires 12-hour shifts, with rotating day and night schedules.
• Minimum staffing for the CCU is 2 RNs when patients are present.
• No on-call requirements.
• Work schedule includes every other weekend and holiday rotation.

Patient Care Ratio

• Critical care patients are assigned a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1 or 1:2.
• For overflow Med/Surg patients in CCU, the ratio is 1:4.

Training and Orientation

New hires will undergo a comprehensive orientation program that includes:

• 2 days of general hospital orientation.
• 1-2 days of unit-specific orientation, tailored based on prior experience and familiarity with the facility's computerized charting and equipment.
