Senior Estimator – Heavy Civil Infrastructure (Caltrans Specialist)An established infrastructure firm is in search of a Senior Estimator to oversee cost estimates, bid preparations, and contract negotiations for significant highway, road, and airfield construction projects with a strong emphasis on public works and compliance with state transportation agencies.Compensation Range:$140,000 – $190,000 annually (Depending on experience)Location:Southern California (Main operations located in San Diego County)Primary ResponsibilitiesCaltrans & Public Agency Bidding: Evaluate and decipher Caltrans Standard Specifications, Standard Plans, and Special Provisions to compile fully compliant, high-volume public works bids.Highway & Roadway Estimation: Calculate detailed costs for robust highway infrastructure, encompassing extensive excavation, structural backfill, accurate asphalt paving, concrete structures, and subgrade preparation.Airfield & Airport Infrastructure: Estimate specialized components for airport development, such as FAA-approved runways, taxiways, apron paving, and high-quality underground utilities.Bid Management & Takeoffs: Lead the creation of precise quantity takeoffs, evaluate structural blueprints, and meet strict agency deadlines for competitive public proposals.Crew & Resource Pricing: Utilize effective crew-based estimating strategies to calculate accurate labor, efficient heavy equipment, and logistical expenses for linear paving and grading tasks.Subcontractor Coordination: Collaborate with DBE/UDBE subcontractors and material suppliers to secure competitive rates while ensuring adherence to Caltrans and FAA contract requirements (e.g., traffic control, striping, quality assurance).Project Tracking: Analyze historical cost data, track material price fluctuations, and work closely with project managers during post-bid transitions.QualificationsExperience: Over a decade of extensive civil estimating and project management experience, demonstrating expertise in Caltrans highway and airport infrastructure projects.Technical Knowledge: Profound familiarity with Caltrans specifications, FAA regulations, heavy grading, and California public works bidding processes.Software Skills: Proficient in specialized civil estimating software (e.g., Hard Dollar or HCSS HeavyBid), Primavera P6 scheduling, and Microsoft Excel.Screening: Successful completion of a physical ability examination and pre-employment drug/alcohol testing.
