Job Overview

Department/School/Unit – Oncology, SOM, Georgetown University

The candidate will provide research support for ongoing projects focused on the biological effects of space radiation and the development of countermeasures relevant to astronaut health and deep-space missions. The candidate will participate in active research activity under direct supervision of Dr. Shubhankar Suman.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

• Assist with laboratory experiments related to radiation biology, oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular or tissue responses to ionizing radiation.

• Support preparation, organization, and maintenance of laboratory materials, reagents, and research records.

• Perform routine laboratory procedures under supervision, including sample preparation, microscopy assistance, histopathological, and molecular biology assays.

• Assist in collection, entry, validation, and organization of experimental data using spreadsheets and laboratory databases.

• Conduct literature searches and assist with scientific reviews, summaries, and reference organization related to space radiation and nutritional or pharmacological countermeasures.

• Support preparation of figures, presentations, reports, and manuscripts.

• Maintain compliance with laboratory safety procedures, biosafety standards, and institutional research protocols.

• Participate in laboratory meetings, training activities, and research discussions.

Work Interactions

The Research Assistant will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Shubhankar Suman and will interact closely with research staff, graduate students, collaborators, and other laboratory personnel involved in space radiation biology and translational biomedical research projects. The position supports the overall research mission of the laboratory by assisting with experimental procedures, data organization, literature review, and laboratory operations that contribute to ongoing investigations of radiation-induced biological injury and countermeasure development relevant to astronaut health and deep-space exploration. The candidate will participate in laboratory meetings, training activities, and collaborative research discussions, thereby contributing to the academic and research environment of the department. This role does not supervise other employees. The position aligns with the broader mission of Georgetown University by supporting scientific discovery, advancing biomedical research, and providing experiential learning opportunities that foster student development, research training, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in biology, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, neuroscience, public health, or a related STEM discipline.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.

• Basic computer proficiency, including spreadsheet and document management software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior laboratory or research experience.

• Coursework in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, radiation biology, or related subjects.

• Interest in space biology, translational medicine, or biomedical research careers.

Pay Range

The projected hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $21.60- $26.40. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
