Job Description Primary City/State: Tucson, Arizona Department Name: M/S-Observation Unit Work Shift: Night Job Category: Nursing Sign‑on Bonus: $15,000 Banner University Medical Center South Campus in Tucson, AZ is an academic medical center focused on providing exceptional patient care, teaching future healthcare professionals and conducting groundbreaking research. The Observation Unit is a 9‑bed unit that supports patients for stays typically under 24 hours, with an array of conditions including diabetes, heart failure, orthopedics, urology and falls. RNs on this unit participate in the PCU Academy and contribute to a collaborative interdisciplinary team. Position Summary This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing practice standards. The RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by themselves or by staff under their direction. Core Functions Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs. Review patient history and physical, obtain diagnostics, and report abnormal results. Complete assessment and reassessments as required. Formulate a plan of care, including discharge, based on assessment data. Establish realistic, measurable goals with patient/family; consider cultural, psychosocial, and age‑specific factors. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and revise plan as patient needs change. Implement plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the health care team. Provide care per physician orders and nursing plan, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Delegate appropriately and supervise nursing staff. Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching, and revise plan of care as needed. Assess progress toward goals and effectiveness of patient teaching. Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record. Ensure documentation is legible, timely, and follows policy. Provide evidence‑based care and may participate in research activities. Engage in unit or facility shared leadership and participate in education, orientation, and mentoring. Contribute to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes, including participation in professional organizations and quality improvement initiatives. In some roles, supervise staff and workflow of the department. Interact with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts, as well as clergy for spiritual support. Synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family response to changes in health status. Minimum Qualifications Current, valid RN license in the state of practice (or appropriate temporary/interim/compact license). BLS certification required. At least one year of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months. Experience in the clinical area for which applying is desired. Must maintain clinical performance competencies through annual validations. Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
