Associate Staff Attorney

Description At Liberty Mutual, an Associate Attorney represents Liberty Mutual and its policyholders in moderately complex civil litigation matters including claims for monetary damages or compensation for personal injuries or property damage of moderate value. The role involves managing cases from inception through resolution while applying legal knowledge, research skills, and client relationship capabilities in a collaborative environment. Responsibilities Manage all phases of litigation, including discovery, hearings, trials, mediations, and drafting legal documents such as pleadings and motions. Support senior counsel in case handling through trial, including preparation, management, and assistance at every stage of the litigation process. Provide clear and reasoned legal opinions and strategic advice to Claims Representatives and insured clients, maintaining strong client relationships through transparent communication. Utilize e‑discovery and case‑management technologies to streamline legal processes, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs. Identify, evaluate, and collaborate on strategies to mitigate legal risks, working closely with clients and senior counsel to facilitate effective resolutions. Ensure all legal documents, pleadings, and motions are meticulously prepared, accurate, and compliant with applicable standards and client expectations. Provide clear, consistent, and timely updates and recommendations to insured clients and claims professionals to maintain alignment with case objectives. Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and best practices within Staff Legal and global Legal & Compliance organizations. Uphold the highest standards of legal ethics and compliance, following legal regulations and licensing requirements and promoting a culture of integrity within the legal team. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the bar in Utah and in good standing; special licenses to practice before particular boards or federal courts may be required. General knowledge of insurance law, and as necessary, workers’ compensation and/or No Fault law. Proficiency in e‑discovery, case‑management systems, and basic legal analysis tools. Strong analytical, research, and legal writing skills. Basic knowledge of negotiation techniques including preparation, active listening, and problem‑solving. Demonstrated ability to manage cases from start to finish under supervision. Effective communication and persuasion skills, both written and oral. Ability to collaborate with clients, claims professionals, and senior attorneys. Organized, process‑oriented with strong time‑management skills. Liberty Mutual is an equal‑opportunity employer.
