Public Safety Shift Supervisor
Alfred University
Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety, plan, organize and direct various aspects of the Department of Public Safety, including, but not limited to:
- Manages the daily operations of the Department of Public Safety which operates on a 24/7 basis.
- Supervises the on-duty Public Safety Officers.
- Properly assess the needs of the University as it pertains to Public Safety and assign duties accordingly.
- Ensure that Public Safety Officers understand policy and procedure and execute assignments accordingly.
- Efficiently perform various administrative duties, such as monitoring scheduling of Public Safety Officers, compiling statistics, and reviewing reports.
- Be proficient in the use of various systems and software such as monitoring camera system, access control, fire and trouble alarms and parking citation system.
- Proficient in the use of various computer systems and software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google forms and spreadsheets and calendar and event database.
- Contact the Director of Public Safety, Dean for Student Experience and/or Vice President for Student Experience when necessary and be prepared to provide clear and concise information and details regarding particular incidents or situations.
- Be always visible and alert.
- Greet all guests, visitors, and community members politely and professionally in passing.
- Patrol grounds and buildings in assigned area, occupied or vacant, to deter and detect criminal activity, security breaches, safety hazards maintenance problems and enforce the rules of the University.
- Respond to reported incidents and calls for service, takes necessary action appropriate for the situation according to guidelines established by the University and departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist victims of crimes with making a police complaint, as desired or required.
- Lock and unlock buildings and rooms according to schedules, authorization lists and upon request.
- Write and submit complete, detailed, legible, and accurate reports in a timely manner, concerning incidents, accidents and calls for service.
- Enforce campus parking regulations. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic, provide information and directions, arrange assistance for motorists with mechanical problems, issue parking tickets and arrange towing of vehicles as necessary.
- Assist University officials, law enforcement agencies, fire, and other public safety officials in the performance of those duties in maintaining public safety on the campus.
- Attend and participate in department meetings.
- Complete training programs when scheduled, including programs held during regularly scheduled hours and outside regularly scheduled hours. Some training programs may require travel.
- Be available for additional work assignments outside regularly scheduled shifts, which may include security for special events, athletic contests, manpower shortages and weather/disaster emergencies.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Public Safety and/or the Vice President for Student Experience.
- Aid in the recruitment, hiring, and training qualified Public Safety Officers.
- Aid in the retention of our Public Safety Officers.
- Develop and implement pre-service, annual in-service, and other ongoing career development for Public Safety staff.
- Maintaining policy standards and operational procedures that provide consistent uniformity and interoperability of personnel and equipment for the Department of Public Safety.
- Assist with the coordination of student guard staffing.
- Responsible for communicating with students and parents during campus visits to promote the safety and security aspect of Alfred University.
- Lead or participate in discussion forums regarding campus safety programs.
- As a critical member of the Emergency Response Team, respond to crises as needed and assist in planning of emergency response procedures.
- Participate in Student Experience meetings, in-service training and other activities as assigned.
- Participate in national, regional, and state opportunities for professional development as needed.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of the University’s physical security and emergency management systems and recommend additions and/or improvements to that technology (e.g., cameras, card access, public address systems, etc.) to school leadership.
- Maintain a working relationship with local police, state and county agencies, fire, and other safety and security-related organizations to ensure their assistance when responding to incidents.
- Respond to requests from departments regarding safety and security matters and assessing their work areas for appropriate measures to take in the event of an emergency.
- Available for 24/7 365 on call response
- Ensures subordinates are present and accounted for by the maintenance of work schedules.
- Provides quality leadership through example.
- Ensuring Public Safety Officers follow University policies.
- Provide supervision and guidance for subordinates to complete operational assignments.
- Aid in writing new policies and procedures as they may be necessary.
- Oversee and manage safety operations, communications, dispatch operations, and public safety patrol operations.
- Foster inclusivity and empower the Department of Public Safety to be compassionate, responsive, and caring.
- Sustain and evolve relationships with campus programs and initiatives to build trust between Public Safety and the campus community.
- Serve on university committees and assist with university-wide initiatives as directed by the Director of Public Safety.
- Maintain a safe working environment within and around campus facilities and associated equipment.
- Supports and assists in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives.
- Supports and assists in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
- Maintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the AU experience.
- Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment.
- Participates in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned.
- Formal Education:
- The Public Safety Supervisor will hold a High school diploma or GED. NYS Licensed Security Guard and must remain licensed for employment. PSS must be of the highest character, possess excellent written and verbal skills, be able to work in a diverse environment.
- Preferred:
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice, related discipline or specialized training in security and safety, or two years security experience in a university, or institutional setting. Police or Peace officer experience with certified academy training is preferred.
- Experience:
- The Public Safety Supervisor must have prior experience in higher education law enforcement or Campus Public Safety/Student Affairs. Must be able to manage and direct a staff of NYS Certified Public Safety Officers/Security Guards, and internal staff, to effectively maintain competent 24/7 coverage in a university setting. The PSS must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have a working knowledge of technology used in the profession. NYS Security, NIMS/ICS, CPR/AED certification required. Preferred qualifications include working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Training available for the right/fit candidate.

The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus.
