Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) provides advanced clinical care, patient education, and procedural support across multiple surgical specialties within the practice. Working collaboratively with surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team, the PA delivers comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care to optimize patient outcomes, ensure continuity of care, and promote an exceptional patient experience.

This position serves as a key clinical provider and liaison between patients, physicians, and staff, supporting a collaborative, patient-centered environment while upholding the organization's mission, values, and standards of clinical excellence.
Essential Functions
Clinical Care

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including obtaining medical histories and conducting physical examinations.
• Evaluate patients in the office and assist in developing individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the attending surgeon.
• Conduct preoperative evaluations to determine patient readiness for surgery.
• Order, interpret, and communicate laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic test results.
• Prescribe medications and therapeutic treatments in accordance with state regulations and organizational policies.
• Document patient encounters, assessments, treatment plans, and clinical communications accurately within the electronic medical record (EMR).

Surgical Care

• Assist surgeons in the operating room as a First Assistant during surgical procedures as assigned.
• Provide perioperative support, including patient preparation, positioning, wound exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and wound closure.
• Perform office-based procedures within scope of practice, including wound care, suture and staple removal, injections, aspirations, dressing changes, and other approved procedures.
• Manage postoperative care, including incision evaluation, pain management, medication adjustments, and monitoring for complications.
• Evaluate and manage postoperative concerns in collaboration with the supervising surgeon.

Patient Education & Care Coordination

• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, expected outcomes, risks, and postoperative recovery.
• Provide discharge instructions, medication counseling, activity restrictions, and follow-up care guidance.
• Coordinate referrals to specialists, physical or occupational therapy, imaging centers, home health services, and durable medical equipment providers as appropriate.
• Ensure timely communication of test results and treatment recommendations.

Collaboration & Quality

• Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, anesthesia providers, and administrative staff to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and clinical workflow optimization.
• Support practice standards by maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and evidence-based clinical guidelines.
• Serve as a clinical resource for staff and assist with onboarding and education related to clinical protocols.
• Maintain professionalism and foster a culture of teamwork, respect, accountability, and exceptional customer service.

Additional Responsibilities

• Participate in call coverage as assigned.
• Assist with clinical projects and operational initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

• Master's Degree in Physician Assistant
• Current Physician Assistant license in the applicable state required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• ACLS certification preferred.
• Infectious Disease Certified

Experience

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a surgical specialty preferred.
• Previous experience first assisting in the operating room preferred.
• Experience managing preoperative and postoperative surgical patients preferred.
• Experience in a multispecialty surgical practice is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, perioperative care, and postoperative management.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and patient education skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians and healthcare teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
