What you'll do:As the EHS Manager for a manufacturing, assembly, or similar industrial facility, you will be the site's primary EHS leader and an embedded member of the plant leadership team. You will partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, human resources, and frontline employees to integrate risk management into production, quality, maintenance, and daily decision-making.
This role is designed for a leader who is equally comfortable on the plant floor and in the leadership room. You will build the systems, capability, and ownership needed to prevent serious injuries and fatalities, strengthen environmental and regulatory compliance, and support reliable operational performance. The work is grounded in Human and Organizational Performance (HOP): learning how work is actually performed, understanding the conditions that shape decisions, and improving the system rather than relying on blame.
Site EHS Leadership & Operational Partnership
- Serve as the on-site EHS leader for a complex manufacturing, assembly, or industrial operation, maintaining a highly visible presence across production areas and work shifts.
- Act as a trusted advisor to the Plant Manager and leadership team, helping integrate EHS considerations into production planning, staffing, maintenance, capital projects, and operational decisions.
- Translate QXO's enterprise EHS strategy, standards, and expectations into practical site-level systems and routines.
- Build ownership with supervisors and employees so EHS is managed as part of the work, not as a separate compliance activity.
- Provide timely, practical guidance that balances risk reduction, regulatory requirements, and operational realities without compromising critical controls.
Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) and Culture
- Champion a learning-focused culture grounded in the principles that error is normal, context matters, learning is vital, response matters, and leadership enables success.
- Create psychological safety for employees to report hazards, near misses, mistakes, and operational challenges before they result in harm.
- Coach leaders to respond consistently and constructively to incidents, unsafe conditions, and employee concerns using Just Culture principles.
- Facilitate Learning Teams and employee engagement activities that bring together the people closest to the work to identify practical, sustainable improvements.
- Recognize positive risk identification, problem-solving, and leadership behaviors that strengthen the site's safety culture.
High-Risk Manufacturing Controls
- Lead the identification, assessment, and reduction of Potential Serious Injury and Fatality (pSIF) exposures, with emphasis on the effectiveness of critical controls.
- Maintain strong technical oversight of machine safeguarding for saws, presses, automated assembly equipment, conveyors, robotics, and other production machinery.
- Own and continuously improve the site's energy-control and Lockout/Tagout program, including machine-specific procedures, periodic inspections, authorized employee capability, and contractor coordination.
- Partner with operations and maintenance to manage high-risk exposures involving powered industrial trucks, mobile equipment, pedestrian traffic, raw-material and finished-goods storage and handling, suspended or shifting loads, line-of-fire, pinch/crush points, electrical work, hot work, work at height, and contractor activity.
- Drive ergonomic risk reduction for repetitive work, manual material handling, workstation design, material flow, and production methods.
- Evaluate occupational health exposures such as noise, process dust, heat, chemicals, and indoor air quality; coordinate monitoring and controls when needed.
- Embed EHS review into the management of change process for new equipment, automation, layouts, materials, processes, and production changes before startup.
Regulatory & Environmental Compliance
- Maintain strong working knowledge of OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910) and applicable federal, state, and local EHS requirements.
- Maintain site programs and records for OSHA recordkeeping, hazard communication and SDS management, PPE, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, emergency response, electrical safety, walking-working surfaces, machine guarding, and other applicable requirements.
- Serve as the site's primary contact for regulatory inspections, inquiries, and audits, ensuring professional engagement, timely response, and sustainable corrective action.
- Oversee applicable environmental obligations, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste, stormwater, spill prevention and response, air emissions or permitting, and chemical storage and reporting.
- Conduct routine compliance assessments and verify that required inspections, testing, training, permits, and records are complete and effective.
Incident Learning & Corrective Action
- Lead or support timely investigation of injuries, illnesses, near misses, property damage, environmental events, and high-potential operational failures.
- Use learning-based investigation methods to understand work as performed, contributing conditions, failed or missing defenses, and system-level causes.
- Ensure pSIF and SIF events receive appropriate escalation, cross-functional review, and high-impact corrective action.
- Develop corrective and preventive actions with clear ownership and due dates; verify completion, control effectiveness, and sustained implementation.
- Partner with Human Resources and claims partners on injury case management, return-to-work planning, and accurate OSHA recordkeeping.
Training, Engagement & Capability Building
- Develop and deliver practical training for employees, supervisors, maintenance personnel, and contractors based on site risks and regulatory requirements.
- Support effective onboarding and qualification for new hires, temporary employees, transferred employees, and employees assigned to new equipment or tasks.
- Coach supervisors to lead effective pre-shift discussions, safety meetings, observations, and follow-up conversations.
- Maintain training systems and records, evaluate understanding in the field, and address capability gaps across all shifts.
- Coordinate employee safety committees and other structured forums for frontline participation and feedback.
Data, Systems & Continuous Improvement
- Manage site EHS data and digital systems to improve reporting accuracy, visibility, action ownership, and decision-making.
- Track and communicate leading indicators such as pSIF exposure reduction, critical-control verification, proactive reporting, assessment quality, training completion, and corrective-action effectiveness.
- Analyze incident, observation, audit, and operational data to identify trends and recommend targeted improvements.
- Provide concise, actionable EHS performance updates to site, regional, and enterprise leadership.
- Participate in QXO EHS networks, share lessons learned, and adopt proven practices from other operations.
Emergency Preparedness & Resilience
- Maintain and test site emergency action, evacuation, severe weather, fire prevention, spill response, and medical response plans.
- Coordinate drills, emergency equipment inspections, and responder training; use lessons learned to strengthen readiness.
- Provide EHS support during significant events, recovery activities, and post-event learning, including occasional off-hours response when needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
- Five or more years of progressive EHS experience in manufacturing, assembly, industrial operations, building products, or a similarly complex operating environment.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA General Industry requirements and demonstrated experience with machine safeguarding, Lockout/Tagout, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics, incident investigation, and occupational health programs.
- Experience building effective EHS systems beyond basic compliance and partnering directly with plant operations and maintenance teams.
- Demonstrated ability to influence frontline employees, supervisors, and senior leaders through credibility, coaching, data, and practical problem-solving.
- Strong written and verbal communication, facilitation, training, organization, and follow-through skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS management systems.
- Professional certification such as CSP, ASP, OHST, CIH, or CHMM preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish capability preferred.
- 401(k) with employer match
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- PTO, company holidays, and parental leave
- Paid training and certifications
- Legal assistance and identity protection
- Pet insurance
- Employee assistance program (EAP)
