Technology Systems Specialist

Job Title: Technology Systems Specialist Work Schedule and/or FTE: 1.0 260/261 duty days Bargaining Unit: Individual Contract Salary Range: $85,000-$100,000/year, depending on experience Job Summary The Technology Systems Specialist supports the daily operation, maintenance, and reliability of the district’s technology systems and network infrastructure. This role serves as an escalation point for Technology Assistants and works in close partnership with the Technology Coordinator to ensure stable, secure, and user‑centered technology services across the district. This position bridges infrastructure and end‑user support by combining advanced technical expertise with a strong focus on service, responsiveness, and system reliability. Essential Job Functions Systems & Network Support Support and maintain district servers, network services, and connectivity across all sites Assist with administration of Active Directory, group policies, and user accounts Support Google Workspace and/or Microsoft 365 environments Monitor, triage, and take initial ownership of system alerts, ensuring resolution, escalation, and documentation in alignment with established processes Assist with wireless systems, switches, and firewall support Assist in monitoring, maintaining, and documenting Google Workspace administration, including alerts, configuration changes, and issue follow‑up Perform routine administrative tasks within Google Workspace, Active Directory, and device management systems in alignment with established standards and procedures; escalate complex changes or design decisions Infrastructure Operations Support backup, recovery, and data integrity processes; verify successful backups Assist with system patching, updates, and upgrades Support virtualization environments (VMware or similar) Work with vendors on troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair Maintain accurate system logs and documentation Oversight of physical layer components, cabling and closet organization Perform approved operational tasks within virtualization systems (e.g., monitoring VM health, restarting services, following established runbooks); elevate configuration or design changes to Infrastructure Advanced Technical Support & Escalation Serve as Tier 2/3 escalation for complex technical and system‑wide issues Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis for recurring problems Support critical systems that impact instruction and district operations Provide both remote and on‑site support as needed Provide direct technical support and guidance to Technology Assistants (Tier I) Escalate issues appropriately based on defined ownership, ensuring alignment with Infrastructure and Instructional leadership responsibilities Oversee imaging, configuration, and deployment of district devices Support lifecycle management including replacement planning and inventory Lead large‑scale rollouts of devices and technology systems Collaboration with Instructional & User Experience Partner with the Technology Manager: Instructional & User Experience to support classroom technology needs Assist in resolving issues that impact teaching and learning environments, escalating when needed Support instructional tools, platforms, and digital resources from a systems perspective Help ensure a consistent, high‑quality user experience for staff and students Documentation & Process Improvement Update and maintain system documentation, procedures, and network diagrams Standardize processes for efficiency and consistency Support continuous improvement of technology services Assist in developing training materials or SOPs for student workers (TAs) Project & Operational Support Assist with implementation of new systems and district technology initiatives Support online testing readiness and system reliability Participate in planning for system upgrades and enhancements Security & Compliance Support cybersecurity efforts by monitoring alerts, following established security procedures, and responding to incidents as directed Ensure data privacy standards are maintained through consistent application of district policies and practices Perform other duties as assigned Work Schedule & Availability Standard work hours align with the district schedule This position may require occasional work outside of regular hours, including evenings or weekends, to support system maintenance, upgrades, or emergency response Participation in an on‑call rotation or availability for critical system issues may be required Minimum Qualifications Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent experience 4–6 years of experience in IT support, systems administration, or networking Experience with: Active Directory and user management Google Workspace and/or Microsoft environments AI best practices Cyber Security Device management and deployment tools Networking fundamentals (wireless, switching, basic firewall concepts) IP‑paging, security cameras, or intercom systems Data Privacy & Standards (FERBPA) as they relate to network security and student data Skills Strong organizational skills with attention to detail Willingness to learn new skills and expand professional knowledge Effective written and verbal communication skills Positive customer service skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, staff, families, and community members Demonstrated patience, flexibility, and professionalism in a fast‑paced school environment Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve complex problems Ability to work positively and effectively with users of all ability levels Ability to follow directions from supervisors and work both independently and collaboratively Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on clear communication and collaboration Preferred Qualifications Experience in K–12 education environments Experience with virtualization (VMware or similar) Microsoft, Google, or networking certifications Experience with Veeam Backup and Replication Physical Demands Lift up to 50 lbs Equal Employment Opportunity Statement Fridley Public Schools ISD 14 is an Equal Opportunity, and veteran‑friendly employer.
