Database Security Patch Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Database Security Patch Engineer with strong hands-on expertise in Sybase and MySQL database administration on Linux environments. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assessing vulnerabilities, planning and implementing security patches and database updates, and ensuring database environments remain secure, stable, and compliant.

Required Technical/Functional Skills

• 5+ years of experience in Sybase and MySQL database administration.
• Strong hands-on experience administering databases on Linux/Unix environments.
• Experience assessing, planning, and implementing security patches and database updates.
• Good understanding of database vulnerabilities, security advisories, and vulnerability remediation.
• Experience analyzing security vulnerabilities and determining appropriate patching or remediation strategies.
• Knowledge of database backup, recovery, and rollback procedures.
• Ability to perform patching with minimal impact to database availability and application operations.
• Experience with database health checks and post-patch validation.
• Strong troubleshooting skills related to database patching and upgrades.
• Understanding of Linux system administration, including services, processes, file systems, permissions, and log analysis.
• Ability to work with security, infrastructure, application, and database teams during patching activities.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess Sybase and MySQL security vulnerabilities and determine applicable patches and updates.
• Review vendor security advisories, vulnerability reports, and patch documentation.
• Develop and execute database patching plans for Linux-based environments.
• Coordinate patching activities with infrastructure, security, application, and other technical teams.
• Perform pre-patch assessments, including database health checks, dependency validation, and backup verification.
• Apply security patches, fixes, and updates to Sybase and MySQL databases in accordance with established change-management procedures.
• Conduct post-patch validation to ensure database availability, functionality, and application connectivity.
• Troubleshoot issues encountered during or after patch implementation.
• Maintain patching documentation, implementation procedures, validation results, and rollback plans.
• Support vulnerability remediation activities and provide status updates to relevant stakeholders.
• Identify potential risks associated with patching and recommend appropriate mitigation or rollback approaches.
• Ensure patching activities comply with organizational security and change-management standards.
• Participate in planned maintenance windows and provide production support as required.
• Work closely with Linux administrators, security teams, application teams, and database administrators to resolve patch-related issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with enterprise vulnerability management and remediation processes.
• Familiarity with tools such as Tenable/Nessus, Qualys, or similar vulnerability-scanning platforms.
• Experience with database upgrades, version migrations, and patch-level upgrades.
• Knowledge of high availability, replication, clustering, or disaster recovery environments.
• Strong communication, documentation, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple patching activities in a production environment.
