Medical Assistant Laboratory Skills InstructorLocation: Online Services - MUST BE LOCATED IN AUSTINSummary: The Laboratory Skills Instructor works under the direction of the Program Director. Teaches theory and practical applications using instructional methods and teaching skills in the classroom, clinical practicum, simulation and skills laboratory tracking. Primary functions include: student attendance and progress, setting educational objectives for the students, on-going mentoring and attention to the continued needs of the students, maintaining a satisfactory working relationship with our students, faculty, and staff. Participate in training, preparation, and continuing education in instructional methods and teaching skills.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Classroom Skills InstructionTeaches assigned number of classes using the prescribed courses of study with established texts and/or prescribed instructional materials.Maintains classroom in good physical order.Responsible and accountable for supervising students in a laboratory and/or clinical setting for respective course(s).Review and order proper medical supplies for laboratory experienceProvide hands-on instruction for students via demonstration.Assess learning by evaluating competency with return demonstrations.Sign, date, and provide feedback for each student skills checklist as requiredManages simulation scenarios and evaluates student responses.Manage CPR instruction in accordance with American Heart Association guidelinesMedical Assisting SkillsPatient communication and human relationsPhlebotomy (venous, capillary draws and centrifuge)ECG and Peak Flow MonitoringSuture removalInjections (subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular)Obtaining vital signs and measurements (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse, pulse oximetry)Triage, critical thinking and patient documentationPerform point of care testing (HCG, Mono, Strep, Urinalysis, Blood Glucose, Hematocrit)Obtain and prepare lab specimens for transportAssistance with general and specialized examinations (i.e., gynecological exams)CPR (Basic Life Support-Provider)Sterile instrument decontamination, wrapping, and sterilizationMedication Administration (various routes and buffering/reconstitution of medications for injections)Aseptic and Sterile Technique (handwashing, decontamination)PPE use, maintenance, and disposalSafety, Biohazard waste disposal and sharps managementMandated reporting of communicable diseaseQualificationsDegree or post-secondary education and relative experience to meet state (TWC) and ABHES accreditation requirements.Minimum of 3-5 years practical experience with teaching experience preferred.Current certification, registration, and/or licensure as a Medical Assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (M.D.)Current Basic Life Support Provider-Instructor Certification through the American Heart Association1 year teaching experience in healthcare or higher ed.
