A Brief Overview

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides leadership and oversight of clinical services/departments as assigned. This responsibility includes planning, organizing, developing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the activities and resources (human and material) necessary for regulatory compliance, quality performance, efficient operations and fiscal accountability. This individual consults and collaborates with other leaders and team members related to operations within areas of responsibility, aligning with organizational strategy and initiatives. The CNO performs the job functions in accordance with the mission and policies of Stanford Health Care – Tri Valley (SHC-TV). The Chief Nursing Officer is the designated nurse executive for the organization. Accountable for demonstrating patient safety as a core organizational value and ensuring alignment with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) National Action Plan for Patient Safety, CMS Patient Safety Structural Measures, and other applicable patient safety standards. Leads and supports system-wide efforts to eliminate preventable harm, improve safety culture, and strengthen organizational learning. Ensures patient safety goals, metrics, and improvement plans are incorporated into strategic priorities and operational performance management. Promotes transparency regarding safety performance and event learning, ensures meaningful patient and family engagement in safety activities, and holds leaders accountable for achieving patient safety objectives. Integrates principles of Just Culture, high reliability, workforce safety, and equitable care into leadership practices and organizational decision-making.

What you will do

Provides leadership, guidance, and supports innovation of leaders and team members throughout the organization. Combines judgement and experience with a strong knowledge of legal, social, economic and political forces that influence the healthcare system. Makes recommendations related to services and resources (staffing, space, equipment, etc.) to meet employee and patient needs. Influences hospital policies and practices throughout the organization leveraging relevant professional practice and standards of nursing practice. Influences performance that aligns with the mission, vision, and values of SHC-VC. Partners with other executives and leaders to guide daily operations, strategic plans, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans and policies of SHC-VC. Directs key initiatives, growth opportunities, and strategic activities. Influences quality performance and patient experience. Ensures regulatory compliance of The Joint Commission and other governing agency standards. Drives improvement and efficiency standards applicable to areas of responsibility. Effectively conducts audits and analyzes data for trends. Proactively uses problem-solving and improvement processes to identify, prevent, or resolve identified opportunities. Responsible for financial management and cost-control of span of control. Develops and influences operating and capital budgets. Supports department leaders to manage to their budgets and insures accountable to variances or contingencies. Promotes employee engagement, satisfaction, and professional development. Ensures staff education, training, and resources that promote success and growth. Consistently engages the work force of departments fostering input and participation in unit/department planning and problem-solving processes. Promotes mentorships and development opportunities. Participates in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements. Fosters collaborative relationships with others and creates a team-focused environment. Coordinates and integrates services through connecting and collaboration. Collaborates with Executives, Medical directors, medical staff leaders, and other members of medical staff to coordinate patient-centered care and other services. Represents and promotes good public relations for SHC-VC at community meetings, conferences, conventions and community affairs. Maintains effective and transparent communication. Partners with leaders throughout the organization, both within and outside of nursing. Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C-I-CARE Standards of the Hospital. C-I-CARE is the foundation of Stanford Healthcare – ValleyCare’s patient-experience and represents a framework for patient-centered interactions.

Education Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in nursing required (if graduate degree is not a nursing degree) Master’s Degree in nursing or related field required

Experience Qualifications

Minimum ten (10) years of progressive management experience in hospital nursing; or responsibility/accountability similar in size, scope, function, and complexity to the SHC-TV Chief Nursing Officer

Licenses and Certifications

Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of California ANCC Certification in Nurse Executive- Advanced preferred.

Base Pay Scale

Generally starting at $144.49 - $192.65 per hour The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
