POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs at Willamette University in Salem, the Dean of Students for Community Care and Inclusion serves as the senior student affairs administrator and primary manager for the Office of Student Affairs at the Pacific Northwest College of the Arts (PNCA) in Portland, with approximately 400 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, with 100 primarily first-year students reside in apartment-style living in “ArtHouse”.The Dean collaborates with campus partners across the College and the larger University community to create environments and initiatives that support students’ sense of belonging, wellbeing, and engagement that fosters students’ success. The Dean serves as the supervisor for 2 professional staff members: the Assistant Director of Student Affairs who also serves as the live-in professional for ArtHouse, and the Director of Community Care and Health Education.

The Dean oversees the advocacy and support efforts for students experiencing distress through the student CARE process that includes a multidisciplinary team that works to assist students in need of personal care and/or academic resources. The Dean also oversees the student code of conduct at PNCA which ensures the fair and equitable management of the student conduct process and student conflict resolution initiatives, and serves as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

The Dean ensures appropriate oversight for student events, student clubs and organization advising, and student engagement and coordinates new student orientation. The Dean serves in an on-call rotation to support on-call RAs and Campus Safety Officers and for emergency response.

The Dean of Students leads efforts to ensure the PNCA Student Affairs department fosters a welcoming campus environment, and aligns with divisional, college, and university policies and goals. The Dean serves as a relationship builder--mentoring, advising, and connecting with students and members of the campus community to identify needs and develop strategies to enhance the student experience at PNCA. The Dean collaborates with the Academic Dean, Campus Security, facilities, faculty, and staff on the PNCA and Salem campuses in accomplishing these goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General Management Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic thought leader who integrates an understanding of student development, wellbeing, cultural fluency, and crisis management in the implementation of initiatives that support student success and thriving communities.

  • Assist in creating and fostering a culture of personal growth and development for Student Affairs staff; provides adequate training and supervision to support supervisees in carrying out their responsibilities and implementing changes to service models, staffing, outreach and other areas in response to evolving student needs.

  • Provide innovative and strategic leadership for the programmatic and operational functions of the Office of Student Affairs at PNCA. Ensure day-to-day operations include efficient systems to meet professional standards and timely and sensitive response to students', families', and University community members' questions, concerns, and requests for assistance.

  • Work with direct reports to ensure effective and responsible stewardship of finances and resources.

  • Maintain an accessible and visible campus presence; is available for relevant university events, staff/student-planned community development activities, and emergency response.

Management of student conduct and conflict resolution processes

  • Oversee the PNCA student conduct process which includes case distribution, investigations, adjudications, sanctioning and overall management of student conduct. Ensures the student conduct process is administered in a fair, impartial, non-adversarial, restorative, and educational manner and that staff involved in the process are trained appropriately. Ensure staff’s timely follow up to violations of residence hall and University policies.

  • Oversee the direction, training, advising, and facilitation of effective conflict resolution involving students. Coordinate and facilitate dispute resolution processes as needed.

  • Serve as an Administrative/University Hearing Officer, investigator, or member of the University conduct panel hearing board for high level judicial and Title IX cases as needed.

  • Lead efforts to educate the University community on policies, procedures, and/or resources pertaining to student conduct/behavioral expectations and supporting students in distress.

  • Collaborate with the Academic Dean and faculty on student behavior concerns.

​Management of student care and case management processes

  • Serve as the Chairperson for the CARE Team. Work closely with the Director of Community Care and Health Education to prepare meeting agendas, and ensure team input, case assignments and timely follow up.

  • Work with the AVP/Dean of Students and Assistant Dean for Community Care & Inclusion in Salem to establish CARE Team protocols and training to CARE team members and community as needed. Monitor communication/outreach efforts to students.

  • Oversee PNCA crisis management response and protocols for supporting students in distress; work collaboratively with PNCA faculty and staff and Salem campus staff as needed.

  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Health and Wellbeing, oversees post- hospitalization support to students returning from a mental/behavioral health setting and transitioning back to the University environment.

New Student and Family Orientation

  • Lead the development and coordination of the new student and family orientation program in collaboration with direct reports, the Academic Dean, and appropriate faculty.

  • Create the new student and family orientation communication plan (e.g., website, e-mails, social media) with campus partners.

  • Coordinate opening logistics with campus partners.

Student Engagement

  • Establish goals and priorities for student engagement. Ensure programs/initiatives promote students’ sense of belonging, community development, and overall well-being.

  • Ensure the on-going development of initiatives in partnership with faculty and staff based on community interests and student needs.

  • Ensure the development of the Student Council and solicit feedback from members of the student council on the creation of policies, initiatives, and programs. Meet regularly with student leaders.

  • Ensure a clear club registration process and orientation and training for student leaders.

  • Ensure fiscal guidance and ethical use for student activities fund usage and expenditures.

  • Maintains visibility through on-campus presence, attending events and engaging in appropriate outreach to develop and maintain relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Divisional Leadership

  • Attend divisional meetings and trainings.

  • Chaperone and assist in organization of large, campus-wide programs as needed such as orientation events, accepted students days, First Thursdays and commencement.

  • Assist in leading task forces, presenting training topics, and executing divisional and university projects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • A Master's degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, or related discipline is required

  • Strong writing and presentation skills

  • Ability to implement problem solving strategies to manage everyday challenges such as crisis response, conflict management, community development, student activism, and student/family concerns in a fast-paced environment.

  • Can function competently under pressure and effectively diffuses crisis situations to demonstrate sound judgment

  • Supervision experience

  • Experience in higher education or student affairs

Preferred

  • Preferred candidates have at least 10 years of progressive student affairs experience in crisis management, student care, advising, supervision, student conduct, and program planning.

  • Previous experience at a college of art is preferred.

  • Possess a sound background in student/human development theory, Title IX, student mental health, crisis management, supervision, community development and student success.

  • Knowledge of relevant laws such as Title IX, Clery Act, Campus Sexual Violence prevention (Campus SaVE) Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the ADA

  • Involvement in local, regional, and national organizations supporting the field of student affairs (such as ACPA and NASPA).

Typical Work Schedule: In-person work 8 am to 5 pm, remote work only when students are not in session; participate in on-call rotation

Physical Demands & Working Conditions: Typical work is performed indoors in a normal office environment.

Salary: $100,000-115,000
